What do you think was Pink Floyd's best work?

Had a bad storm come through last night while I was jammin out to Animals... I sort of pondered the thought and figured I would ask you guys your opinions. Personally, I think shine on you crazy diamond and Pigs (three different ones) are their best work song wise... album wise, I think I am going to have to lean towards Wish you were here. Been outside all day cutting fallen limbs (one that landed on top of the suburban breaking a window and damaging a door) I think the sun has gotten to me :)

Nate2046 05-11-2012 04:31 PM

I think Animals may be my favorite to listen to beginning to end. Going to see Roger Waters perform The Wall, June 11th. Can't wait, never seen him live.

John Rogers 05-11-2012 04:50 PM

There is an unpublished track of Dark Side of the Moon that was done at a concert back when the drugs were flowing freely and it runs about 45 minutes. You can find it on the newgroups such as alt.binaries.mp3.music.bootleg. It really really has some great guitar and organ work!

MT930 05-11-2012 05:07 PM

Wish You Were Here
The Dark Side of the Moon
A Momentary Lapse of Reason
Delicate Sound of Thunder
The Wall
The Division Bell

In That order

porwolf 05-11-2012 05:12 PM

This is got to be one of their gratest recordings:

<object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/fOi2nVB31GM?version=3&feature=player_detailpage">< param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/fOi2nVB31GM?version=3&feature=player_detailpage" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="360"></object>

kanadary 05-11-2012 05:14 PM

for me, wish you were here followed by animals. dark side is good but played too much as is the wall.

Nate2046 05-11-2012 05:28 PM

Yes, was just thinking about Live at Pompeii. I always found that movie mesmerizing. The scenes where they are 'recording' Dark Side of the Moon are especially cool. THat has to be one of the most underappreciated rock music films of all times.

Baz 05-11-2012 05:34 PM

"Pulse" for me. I know a compilation but hey you asked. SmileWavy

targa911S 05-11-2012 05:36 PM

meddle ( "one of these days I'm going to cut you into little pieces")

ummagumma

herr_oberst 05-11-2012 05:56 PM

I know every lick and note on "Wish You Were Here"; I've played it to death, and I still love it.
Yet, I'm not sure if it's my all-time favorite. I think ALL of their albums, (up to and including "The Wall", and ending with anything after the big divorce) are my favorites!

Richard Wright playing the intro to "Echos" on the Pulse album will cause the hair on the back of my head to stand up!

Pink Floyd, it's like Bach! Something new to hear each time you listen!

HardDrive 05-11-2012 05:57 PM

I have always hate Pink Floyd. Depressing crap.

dennis in se pa 05-11-2012 06:05 PM

Dark Side of the Moon. Best album ever.

Second vote for Pulse.

NY65912 05-11-2012 06:10 PM

Wall.....Comfortably Numb for sure.

BlueSkyJaunte 05-11-2012 06:46 PM

My favorite album is whatever depresses HardDrive the most.

Though I find myself listening to Wish You Were Here, The Wall, and Momentary Lapse of Reason pretty often.

madmmac 05-11-2012 07:03 PM

Wife and kids are out of town. Was listening to some of my collection of live DVD's last night.

Pulse was rumbling and took a couple of pictures off the shelf. I did not have to turn it down after the weaklings fell, I could actually turn it up some more.

Baz 05-11-2012 07:04 PM

Great thread.

There will never be another band like Pink Floyd.

So much great music we all have our favs but there's too many good ones to say which one is best, hey.

Here's an example....set to 720p and expand to full screen. The whole song is unreal but the best is the second half with the vocals. I mean look at the production...the background images, special effect lighting, creative lyrics, and actual instrumentals......there's never been anything even close to what PF represents on so many levels.

Listening to this just takes me somewhere away from it all.....I don't even know where but it's far away - that's for sure! ;)

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/o6u4X-obat4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Even the "Pulse" packaging was ahead of it's time...the little red blinking light - I don't know how many times I bought a new battery for it just to maintain that one little entity in my life I knew I could count on and control...ha ha. Crazy......

nynor 05-11-2012 07:05 PM

floyd is what i listen to while motorcycling. i like the live stuff, echoes comes to mind, and pompeii.

rouxroux 05-11-2012 07:20 PM

For me, Animals and Dark Side of the moon. I can still remember as a teenager working a summer job at a fiberglass factory building dune buggy bodies and various Gov't products with a shop full of strung-out bikers listening to Dark Side over & over.

stomachmonkey 05-11-2012 07:38 PM

You can't rate PF by singles.

Need to consider the album as a whole concept.

For me it's a toss up between Meddle and Animals. Dark Side is brilliant but has some distinct POP tones to it.

All of The Wall with the exception of what got AirPlay was also brilliant.

dafischer 05-11-2012 07:40 PM

I'd have to say, in order:

Wish You Were Here
Meddle
Dark Side Of The Moon
Animals
The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn
Ummagumma

All great stuff. I saw them live in 1976 on the Wish You Were Here tour at Roosevelt Stadium in NJ. I was psychedelically altered at the time, and it was absolutely amazing. Had I not been, it still would have been great. And they did Echoes, which to see live is unreal, complete with CO2 fog rising on the stage. In my altered state, I may have as well seen God.
I never really got into their later stuff, but they're still one of my all time favorites. I still enjoy cranking up One Of These Days (to 11) and standing between the speakers in the livivng room, and just listen.

Baz...thanks for the Video. And up yours, Hard Drive.:D

oldgunner 05-11-2012 08:43 PM

Really??? The only album that I feel that really has a dark demon laying inside of it is The Wall... I think that album has gotten so much attention, that most non Floyd listeners base their views of the band on that one album alone.

I have listened to Floyd since I was young in the 70's but have really taken a deeper dive into their material here recently (and actually paid attention to it).

I really think that their music is/was ahead of its time. I think that they are one of the rare bands that started out ehh... and ended up timeless...

I listen to their early stuff and find it to be a little too experimental for my own personal tastes, but I believe that their music got better with time. Unlike many bands that shoot their load of creativity within their first album or two and then fade into the ashes...

I really believe that alot of their work is plain, flat out masterpieces.

Not only do I feel that they are very clever in their lyrics, but the musical arrangements, I just can't comprehend how they put this stuff together compared to normal bands...

The only negative thing that I can think of associated with the band is that most people consider you a stoner if you listen to Pink Floyd or if you meet a stoner and mention Pink Floyd that they always want to try and have this deep philosophical discussion of what they think the music means etc...

P.S. I wasn't trying to make this post seem like a deep philosophical discussion lol :D AND, yes Echoes gives me chills.............

Exactly!

fastfredracing 05-12-2012 03:16 AM

Not one mention of The Final Cut?. I would also rate it up there with one of their best works. Sort of an aquired taste. I have to be in the right place in my mind to listen to it.

Fvk all that

dw1 05-12-2012 03:21 AM

It depends if you want to talk tracks or full disks.

I agree that it depends on mood (esp. full disks) but Pulse or Animals are probably the best overall to me.

For track favorites:
- One of These Days
- Us and Them
- Sheep
- Comfortably Numb
- Learning to Fly
- On The Turning Away
- Keep Talking

Imho, Comfortably Numb is the greatest guitar solo of all time

I do also really like some of the covers of Pink Floyd disks and tracks:

Col. Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade: Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Jack Irons version) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_La1DckEggA
- This is the great bass player & leader of Primus and his jam band doing a version that combines the bass line from "One of these Days" with "Shine On..."

Luther Wright & The Wrongs: The Wall
- This is the entire disk of The Wall performed Bluegrass style. I know this sounds like an odd combination, but it works. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6e2etT1Gtrw

(of course, "We Don't Need No Education" has a bit of a different slant when sung country-bluegrass style ;-) )

Austin Lounge Lizards: Brain Damage
- Also in Bluegrass style, and it is a hoot!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q75qJ3vCmBw

(Fyi, the Austin Lounge Lizards have some prog. rock era/Pink Floyd "cred" as they were formed in the late 70's by 2 Princeton History majors and a philosophy major from U of Georgia)

Excellent stuff

Breathe is another favorite

Oh, and "Have a Cigar"

Baz 05-12-2012 05:46 AM

I found it to be the best "background" mood music for when I have a date over, FWIW. Another reason to appreciate PF! :D

Several species of small fury animals gather together in a cave and groving with a pict

:)

LENELSA 05-12-2012 05:53 AM

Animals no doubt as far as music is concerned.
As far as exploring new territory The Wall is brilliant.

DanielDudley 05-12-2012 07:25 AM

Sometimes I think there is a deep sadness behind much of their work. Amazing, and hauntingly beautiful. It was very popular at one time to commit suicide while listening to the wall.

I still love them though.

May I suggest The Smiths?

Rapewta 05-12-2012 08:03 AM

Maybe not their best offering but I identify great music by time periods in my life.
Dark Side of the Moon and Obscured by Clouds for me.
Fresh back from Asia Military service... married the first blonde I met. Had a $80.00 a month apt. Construction job. Would get home and want to relax. A few beers and DSOTM would be on the turntable. My wife and I would sit on the front steps of the old relic apartment because the place had no air conditioning. Summer and in Calif.
Played that LP more times than I can even try to remember.
To me, it was elevator music. Just nice quality back-ground stuff.
Breathe.... breathe in the air..... La, La, La.

intakexhaust 05-12-2012 09:32 AM

Tough choice. Was at a live performance when they did Animals and hearing them live was over the top. I've been to concerts where the crowd noise bothered me but with that performance, it oddly flowed so right.

Tie between Dark Side of the Moon and Animals. Next would be The Wall. Brilliant stuff.

yetibone 05-12-2012 12:08 PM

It depends on the mood for me as well.

Grantchester Meadows
Remember A Day
Astronomy Domine
Echos
Fearless
Free Four
A Saucer full of Secrets (the one on Live At Pompeii)
On the Turning Away
One Slip..,

among others.
