Do you leave a tip for the hotel maid?

I usually do when on vacation because of multiple days stay. However most of the time I am on a business trip so one r two days at most in the same hotel. I never tip while on a business trip though. Am I cheap or is this the current trend?

We tip. No reason not to. Proper redistribution of wealth. (As opposed to mandated).

I understand tipping at a restaurant, where the server is receiving a reduced wage and is expected to make up the diff in tips.

Tipping staff members that receive a full wage???
May as well tape a fiver to the bathroom wall as a tip for the janitor.

I have spent 100's of nights in hotels over the last decade and have never left a maid tip. I am a 20% tipper for food and drinks.

I tip well at restaurants and bars. Never in a coffee shop or hotel...

Another thing. I go to many "Convention Banquets" per year...At the banquet, the hotel sits up a bar in the dining room. Bartender puts out a tip jar. Often those hosting the function are charged Gratuity for the bartender and 20% per meal. Double dipping?

No. She probably entered this country illegally (or on some kind of temporary visa that expired long ago) and is taking a job from an American who, admittedly, would demand more pay and time off. She's damn lucky not to be back home in her native land being oppressed by the men who run her country with iron fists and would kill her for so much as looking at the men the wrong way. She ought to be dee-effing-lighted to be here cleaning hotel rooms all day long. No, I don't leave tips for maids.

Besides, she runs that effing vacuum up and down in the hallway outside my door during the day when I am trying to study or just relax. I know what she's doing, she's passive-aggressively telling me to get the hell out of HER room so she can clean it and go home. Yeah, well I paid for the room (my company did) and it's mine until checkout time! Oh, and stop blabbering at the top of your lungs in your native tongue at the hotel repairman down the hall who is also from your native land. Go down there and talk quietly to him FFS. Oh, and don't drop the toilet seat lid from the top when you're cleaning the room above or next to mine. I was just about to fall off to sleep when you did that. And how many times do you need to flush the crapper when you clean it? Ten times? Really? Oh, and please put the clock radio back on an English language station or a jazz station and not at full blast on your native language station so when I turn it on to set it I get deafened by some horse's ass yammering in your native tongue. Oh, and if the Do Not Disturb sign is on the door then do not effing disturb me. Don't use your steel key ring to rap on the door suddenly and make me jump a foot out of my chair. Tip? Are you effing kidding?

No, I do not. I've left items behind and/or left items in my room only to come back and they're missing. For how many times this has happened, I stopped tipping.

Before I get hammered for this, the answer is no, I do not stay at cheap hotels.

Some of you bring up some good points though, so my position may be swayed.

Funny I have always gotten great service when I stay at at hotel and give the help the respect I expect. I doubt that they are all illegal etc.

Ditto. I tend to tip well (if deserved) when I know that they are receiving a reduced wage due to the expectation of tips. I'm also one of those weird people that cleans up their hotel room before leaving for the day, so they have it pretty easy with me.
