The poor preparation of the track aside...
I wasn't planing on watching the race... but when I checked it out I actually like the new cars (they look ugly in pictures but look pretty cool out on the track)... and I like that they have more than one engine running. As far as the track... well... Long Beach doesn't seem to have a problem racing on the streets. major screw up (and loss of face) for Detroit and whoever was responsible for having the track ready.

There's really no excuse.
I was very impressed by how the city of Houston prepared for the first CART race downtown several years ago. It was a street course but they repaved the entire course and took the crown out of the road!

Sad because from the aerial photography Belle Isle looks like a nice location/venue.

Roger Penske was the man behind it all, he brought it back to Detroit.

Penske should pave the track and Indy should offer 1/2 price admission for anyone who went this year, if they dare go back again.
Hinch is pretty quick witted in interviews. I like him. Good thing nobody was seriously hurt.

It's really nice not having Danica the center of attention now.

The difference between Long Beach ( & Houston) is Freeze/Thaw cycles which creates havoc on pavement. The patches weren't the only problem - they had severe bumps ( the Servia Accident in Practice)
However, they had long enough (3 Years) to solve this. Shame on Penske |

didnt CART "klang" over manhole covers all the time on road courses? didnt watch much of race and didnt stick it out till the end. IRL just doesnt do it for me anymore and i was a diehard CART fan, and spent my childhood in indy in the 70's when the 500 was king.

IIRC, the manhole thing was a problem at the very first Long Beach Grand Prix. I don't remember if it was the F5000 shakedown race in the Fall, or the inaugural F1 race the following Spring. Anyway, they called the city welder out to tack the covers. There was not a lot of undercar areo in those days.
But it has been so ever since. |

IIRC, there was one street race where they had to go to yellow for a manhole cover weld that broke lose.
"Driven" is so out of whack as far as technical reality is concerned. The scene in the link starts out with drivers jumping into the cars and starting them up. Wrong. The cars back then needed an outboard starter. They then fly all over town with no glasses. At those supposed speeds, one spec would blind you. Props to Detroit for trying. They get an E for effort but a D for quality of the street prep. Hinch is normally fairly easy going and good natured so he must have been really upset...
