I got a good giggle out of the guys at gun club on Sunday. They were singing the praises of Australian Cattle Dogs and I'd said nothing. They said "Don't you like Australian Cattle Dogs?" I said "No way would I have a dog that's smarter than I am." |

A while back I asked about supplements for the border collie. After some hard running, I had noticed that she was having a hard time getting up. Front end not the back.
I had tried a few different types of supplements and seemed to have a hard time finding the same ones twice and they were very expensive from the vet or pet food store. I had picked this stuff up from Costco in Canada. Cosequin Canine DS Maximum Strength Plus MSM I wanted to see if she would eat these willingly before buying in. Doing two a day for the first while and will be watching for improvement. She does seem to like them and calling them a treat probably doesn't hurt. Will probably grab another container. Right now they are $54 including shipping from Costco.ca online and not available in the warehouse. |

She has been the best dog a guy could ask for.
Hard working, eager to please, easy to train (as a matter of fact, I thing she trained me rather that the opposite...), sensitive. When my dad had passed, Pepper knew I was upset and crawled into my lap to comfort me. Something she never would normally do. When my son is upset, she will go lay at his feet. I had contacted the woman I had purchased her from as a puppy and she is not breeding any dogs at the moment. Not sure if she would be happy with another dog in the house but I am thinking of another when I have my sabbatical year. |
When I got my first dog put her in a small bathroom lined with newspaper while i was at work. The rest of the time i had her on a six foot leash. That made her a dog that stayed right by my side, did everything she was told, learned very fast, and always looked to me to okay doing anything including accepting treats from others. She was as well behaved and trained as any service dog for the blind I have ever seen.

sc_rufctr,
I post here VERY infrequently but that video touched me hard and I have to log on just to say thank you!!! That video brought a tear to my eyes... seriously, it did. I am still choked up over that video. Since I do not want to just post a very appreciative comment, here is a very recent picture of my baby on the right, Gravelee (like the lawn tractor just spelled differently), and her new friend Roscoe (our neighbor's recently acquired companion). I love my little girl and her loyalty and love to us is nothing short of extraordinary. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1582805599.jpg |
You're welcome Daryl. I felt the same way.

Poor little dog is just about coming out of its skin to get to get to his/her human. Very touching.
Hey Bryan, It has been about two weeks since I had started Peps on the Cosequin and I think I am seeing an improvement on her movement. The package says two a day for her weight for 4? weeks then back off to one a day for maintenance. One thing I was worried about was how it would affect her guts but she seems to tolerated them well. She does love them though! They must taste great. Edit: Add link https://www.costco.ca/Cosequin-Canine-DS-Maximum-Strength-Plus-MSM-Joint-Health-Supplement-for-Dogs-180-count.product.100320311.html |

Billabong was diagnosed with Lymphoma Tuesday.
We're going to give her Predisone and see if it helps. I don't expect this to rid her of the cancer but want to see if it counteracts some of the effects of the Lymphoma. I'm well prepared to send her across the bridge, but for now am trying to buy her some time. She's had a very good 15 years of life and will go out in comfort, as she deserves. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1583386442.JPG |
Tough break Baz
When my Bailey got cancer, vet thought I would be willing to give her chemo, given how much money I had already spent on her. No way in hell I would do that to my dog. Prednisone is not chemo, but it is pretty strong stuff. Once they start it, you can't just stop, have to taper off. |
I feel for you Baz, cancer is tough, good luck and belly rubs.
|
Sad news Baz but I'm sure Billabong had a great life.
The way I look at dogs and cats. They come with built in heart break so enjoy them while you can. |
Sorry to hear about your girl, Baz.
|
Baz, Billabong,
Very sorry, beyond words to hear of this. I hope you both the best. Ya know Baz, we have to give them back, it is just the way it is. Thanks for sharing all of your adventures! We will definitely miss her. Dan |
Keep her close. There are still plenty of “good days” left.

The Prednisone is helping her a bit, but essentially it's just giving me a longer window to say goodbye to her. Hug your babies.....for us, please....and thank you again. |
So hard Baz. My guys are 16 and 13 respectively, and slowing down hard these days. Had a cancer scare with the younger one, who has had cushing's disease for the last 8 years, and I thought for sure I would be saying goodbye in the following weeks. What they thought they had is super aggressive, so we know now they were wrong or she would have passed a month and a half ago. The 16 year old we watch every day knowing soon we will have to make a decision, but he still perks up puppy style at walk time, he just sleeps the other 23 hours of the day lol.
Enjoy the good days you have left, and remember to make sure not to be too sad around billabong, they always know. |

Just a quick followup......Saturday night very late - almost midnight in fact, I took Billabong to the vet office in Port Orange that stays open all night and we helped her over the bridge. She was having trouble just standing up. Up until then she had been functioning just fine, albeit at a much slower pace than usual.
I held her the entire time and told her I loved her and it would be OK. She was a brave girl and never whimpered or even cried the entire time. I brought her home in the early morning hour, wrapped her in her favourite blanket, and buried her in the front yard. The staff at the vet office were very helpful and compassionate. I don't have to tell anyone who has gone through this how surreal the feeling is. So far Winkipop doesn't seem at all affected. We'll see what happens. I think because she was the alpha, she will be fine, and if it were the other way around it would be Billabong who would feel a bit lost. Anyway - I just wanted to post the update and my sincere thanks again for all the love from my friends here. I feel very fortunate to have had so many good years with this special girl. She will remain in my heart forever. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1583807420.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1583807420.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1583807420.JPG |
Hardest thing in the world to do.
|
Baz. I feel really bad for you. We all know how much you love your dogs. Hoping you heal within a reasonable time.
|
RIP "Billabong"... Take care Baz.
|
Man, that truly sucks, but think of how good you made her life (full of love), and it sounds like she returned the favor to you, tenfold...RIP.
|
RIP Sweet Girl.
