About 12 or 13 years ago, my daughter talked me into getting her a dog.

We headed to the pound and found this one pictured below taking a nap. Half dachshund, half big dog (take yer pick).
He's 35 pounds with 2" of ground clearance. His tail even drags on the ground. Funny looking.

They said he was about 3 years old when we got him, hard to say but he wasn't a pup.
She said, "I'm going to name him lucky".

I laughed and explained why that's a bad idea, and told her the joke of the old guy describing his dog who is blind, has 3 legs, goes by the name of lucky.

She didn't care, his name was Lucky.

13 years later she's off to college, he's pretty much my dog now.
And yes, he's earned the name.

About 5 or 6 years Ago he completely lost his sight. He's about 99% deaf, he's had 3 cancer surgeries and one hip surgery and had been under general anesthesia 6 times total.

He's cost me a fortune, but he's my buddy and I can't put him down.
I can tell he's getting sick again, I'm feeding him everything in the house and he's starting to loose weight again.
This might be it.
he's a good dog.

My daughter's dog (my buddy) has the cancer again and there's nothing they can do this time.
He's lost almost half his weight and is wobbly in the legs, but he's still happy to see me and to get his ears scratched.

She's coming down from school this weekend.
I hope for 3 things: she gets to see him again, he doesn't pass on Christmas, and he doesn't suffer.

This is gonna be tough on the little guy. I don't think I'll ever have another dog.

We're all hoping with you, Sammy. Scratch his ears a lot and sing some Merle Haggard to him.

This is gonna be tough on the little guy.

It's gonna be tough on all of you, but you'll get through it together. Just keep reminding each other that he was... truly... Lucky... because y'all took him in and gave him a good life.

He certainly knows that and is grateful in his own way.

I don't think I'll ever have another dog.

Try to leave that door open... at least cracked. There's another Lucky out there that needs a good home. Ask me how I know.

...:(

Out most days with the Red Heeler we rescued over 10 years ago. She has been incredible. Both photos from yesterday.

Cartoonist honors her memory of a dog with a comic strip:

Anything about nothing :: Comics - Good Boy

*It's sweet and sad. I know a few of you guys have lost your buddies this year.

^ Sorry about that.

It is a lovely tribute, but it never fails to summon the onion ninjas.

It is absolutely a great tribute...I teared my way through it and I thank you for posting it.

The spoiled alert was not meant as a pejorative.

We had our Blue Heeler almost 19 years.

He would assist me when I had felled a tree for firewood. As I walked up the trunk lopping off the branches he would run in and grab them as they fell, pulling them back away. Even trying at the large ones that greatly outweighed him -- front paws low and dug into the earth, mouth clamped around a large branch, his rear haunches high, his body and head tugging like a bulldozer!

But this last year was unkind to him. Bitten by a rattlesnake or copperhead(?) combined with his age, his health declined. Rear legs weakened, loosing a lot of weight, almost deaf, the inevitable end was approaching.

The pain started Tuesday - had to have him put down yesterday.

RIP “Skipper”

Having just lost my best friend of 14 years last month that was gut wrenching.

Dammit, 64 y.o. men shouldn't cry when reading stuff like this. I miss every dog I ever had.
