Seems to be a clever dog and is going to make a very loyal member of the family http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1514724654.jpg He has got a bit of a Trump hair thing going on but its his puppy fur so he'll grow out of it http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1514724688.jpg |
All of my dogs have been Goldens.
When I got my first one my friend had a light silver bird dog he hunted with and called her Nickels The Golden was a dark copper color so I called her Penny. She lived 17 years and was very smart. After only a couple of months found I just didn't want life without a dog so got another. At that time I was really into autocrossing my Porsche so called her Camber. She was an alpha dog and not very smart comparatively. About the same time I got Camber moved my Mom in with me with the beginnings of Alzheimers. Camber was really my Mom's dog. Camber did speak english like, I want out, I'm hungry, I love you, I want out, hello, go play with dotty (dotty was the dalmation next door), etc. Mom's post stroke therapist brought her kids to hear the talking dog. She said as a speech therapist the dog was making all the correct sounds. Said if dogs could move their lips she would be speaking perfect english. Compared her speaking to Astro on the Jetsons. Camber passed after 13 years. The next day, due to Mom's sever depression over Camber's passing, got another golden puppy. Had gotten a Cayenne (with air suspension to set loading height for Mom to get in and out easier) so called the puppy Pepper. From day one Pepper stuck to Mom. Pepper woke Mom from her Alzheimer's haze. Mom's memory and abilities came back to take care of Pepper. Mom even started cooking for herself again so she could feed Pepper from her plate. Sadly after only 3 months of getting Pepper, Mom passed. Pepper is 3 years old this month and is smarter than Camber but not quite as obedient as Penny. Still working on her getting distracted by new people otherwise she would be leash free like Penny was. Training her so we can both do diabetic alert dog training. |
The DOG thread
After Cash the Golden lost his long time buddy, he became down and out. Up until the family got him his own Christmas present.

So as of 2 days ago,we've got a new family member - Dante, a 3 year old male 14-lb Miniature Schnauzer. He was rescued from an elderly private breeder just 1 week ago who has been voluntarily surrendering some of her 75+ dogs. The poor guy was just used for breeding and has zero social skills. Doesn't even know his name. Doesn't know any commands. Won't walk with a leash, doesn't know what to do with toys, etc., etc. He's extremely shy and not even sure how to show affection, but he tends to keep one paw on me at all times. I've got some time/work ahead of me, but I knew that going in
On the positive side, he's very smart and is already responding to "Dante, come". Our Schnauzer Smokey who's twice his size is getting along very well and even being protective of him already. He got neutered this morning and the vet said his teeth were pretty bad (16 extractions) but otherwise in really good health. The adventure begins. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1515693763.jpg And Smokey needs a hair cut! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1515693763.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1515694461.jpg |
Curt, great to hear your still out there. Good for you taking in that pup!
|
Yeah, I'm still out here. Somewhere. Thanks Bob!

Bless you Curt for giving little Dante a forever home - and getting him away from the nasty excuse of a human being he got stuck with. I truly hope she gets jail time for the atrocities she committed.
Getting back to Dante....been there and done that with Billabong who had a very rough start in her life and it took years for her to learn how to be a dog. Just takes time and love and I know she'll have those in spades with you and yours. Much respect to you sir, good luck, thanks for sharing, and please give your furballs a few belly rubs from all of us! SmileWavy |
Thanks Baz! You're right, it's going to be a long haul, probably with a lot of frustrations. But I'm up for it and it's fun to see even little improvements. He's a lucky boy (unlike many) and the timing was just right for both of us.
The funniest thing is his fascination with the TV. He sits there with his head cocked and can't quite figure it out. Of course, he's probably looking at me and saying the same thing :D |

Curt,
Great job taking in the puppy mill dog- I just can’t understand why so many breeders won’t treat their dogs with compassion. Seems like a simple thing to treat them like family members. |
The way it was told to me is this elderly woman breeder was "old school" and had her pet dogs that lived in the house. Then she had the breeding dogs that she looked at like farmers look at cattle. They weren't technically 'abused'. They were fed and got reasonable medical care (so do prisoners). They're all just animals right? No! I believe there is a special bond between humans and dogs that is different and they should not be treated that way.
Anyway, he got neutered Thursday and the vet found some serious teeth problems. She said he had to be in extreme pain and she pulled 16 (out of 42 total). She didn't even charge me because she just wanted to help the poor guy out!! When I picked him up the next day, his eyes were wide and bright :) He just looked happy. He's making major improvements each day and did good on the leash today, even running a bit. Look at the first pic I posted compared to today: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1515983378.jpg |
I have a feeling it will turn out really well! He looks like a sweetheart.
