My wife has had dachshunds since she was a little girl. When we got married, she had a dachshund that lived to 18. The dog's name was Perry Porsche. And she was born 15 years before we met.

We have a hobby farm in that we have my wife's horses and donkeys and bale some hay for friends. On this farm we have two dogs. The first is a Border Collie. She is a natural fit for the place, chasing off coyotes and suspicious pheasants. The other dog is a York-tsu cross. She thinks she is a farm dog too. But unfortunately, it's the funny farm.

Mia has become a little camera shy- notice how she shuts down her tail wagging. I talk to her all the time, but she's not sure what shanaghans I'm up to with the phone in her face.

Does Mia like treats? I suspect if she gets treats when daddy does weird stuff with that camera, her attitude might change.
The aforementioned "funny farm" dog hated the snap sound when her toenails were being trimmed. We dug out the clicker and treats. Now she comes running at the sound.

I'm charmed and happy with the coy game she's playing. I know she loves it. The tail starts up again as soon as I move back to her face. She (and the others) get a treat every night after dinner. Within 30 seconds- Mia is very good at reminding me immediately. They're Virbac C.E.T. Enzymatic chew strips. 5 minutes of heaven for them.

Have you used these long enough to determine if they work?

Yes- 21 months. My vet recommended them. Tiny chance a dog could choke on them, but I give it to them after dinner indoors. They LOVE them!

Bosco gave me a scare this morning. We got up about 5:45 as usual, went out and he peed and he brought the newspaper in (as usual), he had a couple of treats (as usual) and I settled on the couch with my iPad and him laying at my feet (as usual). After a bit he got up and went around the corner to the front door barked at something and I got up to look but saw nothing and sat back down. Next thing I notice is him going around in circles and wobbling around like he was drunk. He kept moving his head around quickly and panting more than usual. I picked him up and held him for a while, put him back on the floor and he was still acting wobbly. I woke up my wife and we were trying to decide if we should call the emergency clinic ($$$). Then a few minutes later he seemed to be more stable and I took him back outside, he pooped twice and peed again and seemed to be walking normally. At 8AM my wife called our regular vet and he called back and said it was probably a “vestibular episode”, and asked if we took a video of it. They said it would be hard to diagnose without seeing him in the act. We googled it and it occurs mostly in older dogs (he’s 13) and can be due to thyroid problems. The vet just put him on a thyroid pill a couple of weeks ago. So the rest of the day he’s been totally himself. If it happens again, we will videotape it and carry him over to the vet. Scary stuff.
