Talked to the owner. He has a new bird dog that gets all the attention. Family is gone a lot as they own a bakery and he's a fire fighter in a town 100 miles away. Owner doesn't want me to feed "Dexter". Sez he gives him dry food once a day. Claims Dexter comes home to eat and right back to my house. I did some reading and looks like recommended feeding is 1/2 to one cup a day broken into two meals. Question: Should I get him some dry food and put out? I guess human food is not recommended? I'm new at all of this.

Sometimes I supplement with Pink Salmon in a can (Bumblebee) - Wild Caught Tunafish in a can (oil) - and raw chicken necks. They do mooch a few puffs of popcorn from me on occasion or I will give them some veggies while I am prepping in the kitchen or sometimes a piece of meat but those are not routine - just occasional. They also get a dog biscuit each morning when I leave the house. They have their human trained don't they? ![]() Good luck with little Dexter!

I’m in a similar situation, so I started volunteering with a rescue and will sit dogs for other fosters on occasion to get a dog fix! Had some fun times with puppies without the commitment. Rutager

The rescue I volunteer for had a chocolate lab puppy arriving Saturday night and no one else had offered to foster her and I happened to have had taken this week off from work to do so projects around the house.
She’s a cute one and doesn’t seem too “chompy”. ![]()

I could never do that. I would end up with 100 dogs.
Note that the large, 85# dog is laying down ![]() 9 months later, puppy will be a year old next month

My Golden Retriever, Gracie Mae, slept on the rug in front of a sofa in our great room ever since we moved into this house. Yesterday we moved the sofa to a different room, with different carpet, and put another sofa in the great room and left the same rug in front of it.
I assumed she would keep sleeping in the same room on the same old rug. Nope - she moved with the sofa. Makes no sense since all she did was lay up against this sofa, but who understands dogs.

The “secret” of fostering dogs is to realize that by getting them adopted by others saves a lot more dogs than if you just adopted it yourself. I rarely foster since my hours can be long, but when I have, I bring them to all the meet and greets and get lots of pictures up on the website so I don’t have them so long that I start to bond strongly.
