Laptop hot on the lap

I have a 2008 MB 15" and it gets hotter that hell in the summer. Do the new ones get as hot and do the solid state drives correct this issue to some extent. Is it the spinning HD that causes the heat or the battery or both contributing to the issue? Thanks.

My Toshiba will brand you if you have shorts on. I just use a cool pad, and don't worry about it. Beth's Acer is a couple of years newer then mine and I think you can light cigs with the bottom.

Guess I'm going to have to find a cool pad because it's just shy of marking my legs.

I'm sure there are a bunch out there, but my daughter got me this one for Father's day to use with my 15" macbook pro. Works great and keeps everything cool, no more burnt thighs.

My kids MacBook Pro's seem to be cooler than my old HP. Instead of blowing down, I think they blow out the back.

On you lap?

Laptops can get particuarly hot when used on your lap as the air vents on the botttom get blocked and the fan can't suck air in.

Sure they get hot on a flat surface, but don't worry about that, as long as the fan can blow air over the internals they are designed to take those temps.

Download a fan control software and ramp up the fan speed before it gets that hot.

If it has gotten hotter over time, get a can of compressed air and blow the crud out of the vent. This usually makes a big difference. Every laptop I have owned has developed a heat problem usually fixed by cleaning out the dust

I got a cool pad from walmart and it was useless. According to iStat pro my macbook pro didn't drop 1 degree. I never tried any others to see if they made a difference.

Dell Latitude from work has vents (intake?) on the bottom. It stays hot. My home laptop is a Lenovo T500. It vents between the rear and side. Much cooler than the Dell.

#1. The CPU is the primary source of the heat

#2. Yep, clean out the vents and make sure the fan is working

#3. Put something between you and hte laptop. I have an old cupboard door which serves for this purpose.

I always have one of those tall stand-up fans close by me (since I like to be cool and don't want to run the A/C since I like windows open and it is cheaper) and I have that pointed at me when I have my laptop on my lap. I also keep my legs apart so that they do not block the air inlets/outlets and such that they are more underneath the little feet that the laptop is meant to sit on. It still keeps my lap warm but not burning. If I move the laptop and my bare skin touches the bottom or the air outlets it can almost burn me, though. Blue jean shorts are a must.
