Just found 2006 911 carrera 4s - $25000

only it sold " as is " engine does not run....what could be the worst case to get this car on the road?

Outside of the questionable engine the car is sweet, 61000 miles

Worst case? IMS issues ruined the engine? Could take a new engine to put it on the road. Do a PPI with a shop that knows the issues...

Worst case is a new engine indeed. If the seller dumps the car, that's probably what it needs. Nobody sells a car at a steep discount for needing minor work. Now, I don't have a clue what a DIY replacement engine would take. I am sure you could get a used engine - I would call Partsheaven New, Used, Rebuilt Porsche Parts - they can give you a price range, even if they don't have one available.

This is at a dealer so they know the values involved. I'm sure the engine is at its worst, but that is something I can deal with. Given them a call tomorrow

I recall hearing 996 crate motors were something like $7500. So how much would a 997 crate motor cost with installation? $10K? $12K?

If this is at a dealer, why don't they just stick in a new motor and sell it for $5-10K profit?

I don't know if they're still $7500. That was a price I had heard tossed about maybe 10 years ago.

Just the euro exchange rate will have brought that up. And that's not a 997 engine either.

This is an old thread too and looks like $12k not including core:
How much for reman 997 S engine - 6speedonline.com Forums
One guy in there thinks $10k for a new engine wasn't that bad.

This is a 2010 thread and now they are talking $14k not including core.
997 C2S engine failure help - Rennlist Discussion Forums
Note that the OP on this thread has a bad engine on very low miles. Amazing. He also never had a problem with his waterpumpers aside from rear main leaks. Amazing!

Sort of makes that 25k broken car not look so much like a good deal anymore huh? I have been shopping for an early 996 myself. I like a project, and love a good deal, but the #'s just don't really add up to buy one broken, and put it back together. Even if you DIY, you are not really going to be that far ahead, unless you just must have a project.

I have the 996 back here again for some work.

I drove it today again.

I really need to get my 914 running again...

Why not a 993 for a fixer? It isn't cheap to fix either, but at least you won't be throwing good money after bad. I can't see the 997 doing great in the future in terms of holding its value. It will be a $25k car in a few years even with a good engine. Better than the 996 probably, but not a classic for a long time.

Cheers,

George

993 parts stopped being reasonable a long time ago. I'll sleep in mine before I sell it. But I wouldn't take on a project 993 unless I got it for a song and planned to keep it forever.

My point is that the 993 has bottomed out, so you don't have depreciation in addition to fixing costs. None of these are good flipper projects, that's for sure.

The only good deals to be had are private party. If a stealership has the car, it will be $$$. If it was a deal and someone could make money on it, the resident technician would have bought it before it even hit the open market.

Retail is $52k on that car. You won't get that with a replaced/rebuilt motor. I would suggest researching what they are really selling for, researching motor and labor cost, then doing the math to determine if you'll make any money. I've heard good things about these guys rebuilding the M96.

Flat 6 Innovations

If you do the work quickly depreciation is a non factor. Good luck finding a good deal on a 993 fixer, they are not cheap even needing work.

That same car has been for sale for more than a month. I came across it several times in my search. I think I have seen it on autotrader, e bay, and craigslist.

What idiots

It's a Carrera C2S not a C4S.....rear wheel drive, not all wheel drive

When it's all fixed, it's a $40K car
