Vinegar mother
Anyone know how long a Vinegar Mother will last if almost all of the vinegar has been poured out? My GF, not knowing what it was, just emptied the bottle of red wine vinegar...
I know people cultivate these things, and they take quite a while.

Is a vinegar mother something like a wet nurse that went sour?

Did it dry out? If it is still moist, you may have a chance. I would try adding just a small amount of wine, just enough to cover the mother. Then build it up over time from there. In the NYC area, we used to be able to get a new starter, but I haven't looked in a number of years. Best vinegar is made from home made wine...

Oh goodness... that is REALLY gross. If I had found that in a bottle in the cupboard, I would have thrown it out and recycled the bottle.
YUCK! angela
