Torin Jacks - Do they suck or am I unlucky?

I got a 7,000 lbs capable jack for Christmas last year. It couldn't even hold up 1 corner of my 914 without settling back down. Great. Finally got around to returning it for a refund last week @ Sams.

So I bought an ATV jack to do my first ever engine drop on my 911. Worked GREAT! Except now it's leaking. And I need to figure out how to get the engine off of it without returning it to the car. I have 30 days to return it to Northern Tool.

Both jacks were Torin. Am I unlucky - or is their Chinese made crap...really crap?

I have the atv jack also, it is cheap Chinese junk. Never again. My 7.5 ton floor jack is a craftsman, it wont lift anymore either. Replaced it with a otc.

Total crap. I hucked mine into the trash and got a Craftsman. No regrets.

You really didn't improve your lot there.

AFA getting the motor off the ATV jack, just build a bridge on some cribbing and roll the jack in between. Raise it you can long enough to slip your cross members under the motor and let down. It will be ready for a another jack.

Or, lift the motor with a hoist. I used one of these to raise a motor into a truck bed.

They can have a 4000# or higher rating, but they aren't something designed for lifting a dead load. Maybe once and be careful. HF has them for under 20 bucks. They can be useful around the house and property, once you have one.

Any idea how long this has been the case? My Craftsman racing-style floor jack has been flawless for several years now.

I've got a 3000# harbor freight racing jack that's around 10 years old. I've never had a problem.

Quite a while.

Check out this hilarious thread where I returned my POS big heavy steel Crafstman jack for the low profile Aluminum one -

(probably the one you have),

when almost simultaneously Legion was at his hometown Sears, returning his POS low-profile Aluminum Craftsman Jack for a heavy-duty, Steel one just like mine.

I think it's just a crapshoot unless you suck it up and buy a really good jack, or an easily-serviceable one.

FWIW the current Craftsman one I have has been fine for a while now.

Absolutely not! I have one of those. It feels like the cheapest of cheap that China is capable of producing. Will never trust anything important to one of those.

So we're all in agreement...all jack brands suck?

Interesting - the Craftsman one has been used regularly without any problems whereas the Torin one it replaced barely made it a couple of years... Possible it's coincidence but maybe not.

I've got one Craftsmen 2 or 3 ton jack (25+ years old) that has outlived two other Craftsmen jacks, including a racing jack.

It just won't die.

I don't know where to get a "real" jack anymore, SnapOn replaced my decade old floor jack with a Chinese built jack as well. They swear it's the same quality as the ones made in Wisconsin, but I doubt that will be the case.

Although not high-end, my Arcan jack was $95 at Costco, is low enough to get under the front of my 911, and has an 18" lift range. It has served me well. Don't use the handle as a breaker bar though. Just sayin.

pat*ssle has quoted me once more leaving out my disclaimer. I was suggesting that the device could be used to lift the motor off the ATV jack. That's like 2 inches. And I'd do it again if that's all I had. It's not like I'm sending a child to stand under the thing.

When it gets sluggish, take it to a good HYD shop and get it overhauled. Did the same with three of my floor jacks last year and they work like new... for $45 each!
