Mustang Shelby GT500 and Boss 302 test

Ford Shelby GT500 vs Boss 302 Mustang, one to rule them all: Motoramic Drives | Motoramic - Yahoo! Autos

"I am that Mustang critic—the one who snidely whispers under his breath, "solid axle rear" whenever Ford's iconic pony car is mentioned. In the age of magnetic dampers (Camaro ZL1) and even passenger vehicles using a multi-link rear, Ford's setup seems as outdated as an Ed Hardy wardrobe. So imagine then my furrowed-brow skepticism when the 2013 Ford Boss 302 Mustang and 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 rolled in front of our Yahoo! offices."

excellent article. Love both, but would also tip my hat to the Boss!

If I had $40k to spend on a new car (I don't), the Boss 302 would be at the top of my list. My boss has a 2012 5.0 with the track pack, 6-speed manual, and some tasty bolt-ons, he absolutely loves the car. Coming from someone that has had a Cobb Tuning built 500 HP STi, a Peter Ferrell Supercars RX7, a 964, and a host of other cool stuff, his endorsement carries some weight.

Impressive power from the GT500. If I had to drive a car that weighed nearly 2 tons, I'd want 662 HPs.

The Boss is a better track car, the GT500 a better cruiser. Though I would choose the GT350 over them. My favorite of the current Mustangs is the 07-08 Shelby GT/SC. Classic lines and tons of horsepower, very few around.

550 HP in a car capable of 1G lateral that's cheap to maintain.

The independent rear suspension would be nice, but was determined to be not worth the cost.

Funny, his con for the Boss is one of my favorites. I love the sound. That drone is music to my ears. I will put in a lower gear just to get it louder. I love this car and I will never sell it.

It's not a Mustang but........

I have the 5 ltr engine in my 2012 F150 4x4. It is "only" rated at 360 hp/ 380 ft lbs torque! Now that I've got a bit over 3k miles on it, it is starting to wake up and show it's muscle. The truck is a standard cab with the 6 1/2' bed so it is the smallest and lightest combination available. The exhaust note is quite nice also. The engine in my truck is making more hp than the original Boss 302 did back in 69-71!

I'd get one if the front end wasn't so damned ugly.

Chrysler did it right on the first try with the Challenger. Why can't Ford get it right with the 'Stang?

I bought a 2012 Boss 302 to replace my high miles daily driver 993. I ended up trading it on a 2012 F150 reg cab short bed with the detuned 5.0 mentioned above. I kept the 993 after the new wore off the Boss .I realized it wasn,t as good a daily driver as I had hoped. Gas mileage was not nearly as advertized although gas mileage on the F150 is very good.
The mustang is capable of delivering high cornering power and was very fast in a straight line but I couldn,t throw it around like the 993 as the overhang and driver,s view/ postion is not ideal.

It is different. You get used to it. In a Lotus, Porsche or NSX you see the pavement in front of you more easily. It took some time to adjust to the view from a Mustang. I am very happy with it now.

Ever driven a Challenger? I had one for over a week as a rental and hated it. Huge pig of a car with terrible visibility and mediocre build quality. It looks decent, but still an oversize caricature of the original.

If I were to buy a new car now, it would be a Boss 302 Laguna Seca edition, 444 naturally aspirated horsepower is intoxicating especially without that annoying supercharger whine of other mustang models.

No, I haven't. I was speaking purely on aesthetics. Chrysler hasn't put out a performance vehicle of any kind since the Viper.

You're not the first person I've heard that from, but I always have trouble understanding how someone would think the Challenger is the looker of the pony car bunch. While I give credit for a nice tidy front end, that rear 3/4 view is monstrous (the CTS coupe holds the award imo for ugliest rear view ever); Just look at that ridiculous amount of distance from the exhaust shroud to the top crease of the bumper.

And when you look at a straight rear shot, it suffers from that top heavy look which always reminds me of the fat lady bending over yard art for some reason.

Thanks to my neighbor, I've had quite a bit of seat time in the Mustang, in all trim levels save for the Boss and I'd have to say I prefer the 5.0 GT over the GT500. Wouldn't mind one as a DD when prices trickle down.
My only criticism is that car feels so damn big, but I imagine you get used to it.

The Boss seating position is too low and the car feels too big. I have a 1966 Mustang fastback which feels smaller and lighter with a higher seat.

I was watching the Mustangs at auto cross this year. They hook up really well, and look very composed, as well as putting up fast times.

Turn in is impressive so is ultimate grip with so much tire. The new 5.0 engine is a jewel but the car is too big . I think it is still lighter than either the Camaro or Dodge Challenger but still too big
