UPS was very, very good to me today (NOS Cinelli Giro d'Italia bars and 1985 Super Record brake set complete):

Very nice - spendy jewelry for the bike!

Not really fitting with the recent old school trend in this thread, but here's my new flame... Kind of emotional to relegate old bikes to the shed or ice cream runs w/the kids - we did a lot suffering together!

Wild looking frame. I like the looks of it but tell me more.

I almost bailed out of that video before the good stuff. :D Yet another reason to not live in NYC.

My first FS. Wondering why I waited so long.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1400162118.jpg

Has anyone noticed how many older, high-end 26" mtn. bikes are 'dirt' cheap these days? $1000 bikes in their day but now $100-$200. XT equipped, hard tails w/ Rox susp. to F/S with V-brakes.

I don't know what this junker cost when new but on the cheapo end, I just picked up this 1993 Schwinn (full rigid) for $7 at a Goodwill. Not that I have to, but I'll put $30 into it for slicks, tubes, chain, used road drop bars and dual platform SPD's. It'll be for towing a kids trailer, loaner, city beater.

But the 86's connection to Hinault, Lemond, the 80's, etc. is the attraction. That said, I'd take a 171 in a heartbeat. I happened to find a 1997 Look catalog at a swap meet recently:

Thanks Curt. Seeing that brings back so many smiles, warm and fuzzy feelings. This was a time when you bought a frame(usually they stock only one frame) and your size was never stocked and you had to wait for it. All I ever got was a glossy photo with a few sentences and a bunch of number on it. I had that Look catalog and worn the pages out waiting for my frame. I had that yellow team one.

Why don't you buy another? Are there any floating around? What happened to yours?

look 171 05-16-2014 01:05 AM

Sid,

I gave it to some kid who started riding seriously and wanted to race. I have moved on. Its just something I missed, like an old race cars that's been in battle with you for those fun years. There are only so many I can ride at one time. When you see your old car, you smile and know where the quirks are. Some are just missed more then others.

What a GREAT picture. Talk about a snapshot from another era. Perfect kit down to the socks. The bike is immaculate. Chainset set to afterburners. And a visage of casual nonchalance.

Looks to have some sort of climbing cog?

jyl 05-16-2014 06:43 AM

Start watching eBay for them.

Here's a NOS frame

Here's one that sold recently

I don't know much about these. Were they aluminum lugs and carbon tubes? Edit: never mind, I read the brochure (duh). Al lugs, CF tubes and fork. Veddy nice. I have a Vitus 997 OCT project frame that has some similarities.

Perfect flat back, and cap reversed for aero . . .

look 171 05-16-2014 08:22 AM

Jalabert is such smooth rider, great form, not a slight upper body movement even when the he's pouring on the power. Oh, the poker face too, that's hard to do when suffering.

Speaking of aero, anybody notice the new trend in helmets at the Tour of Cali? Supposed to be the latest in aero development. They look like hockey helmets to me
