As to the frame? I don't own a single bike without some tire rub damage on the chainstays but surely that's because of the mighty power I produce when I'm standing on the pedals.... . I doubt if it would put me off from buying a vintage steel frame, knowing that I've never had a frame break down there, and any vintage roadbike I would ever assemble at this stage of my life would be a neighborhood cruiser, not a hard-mileage missile. |

I stopped by the Carson track last night to pick up my kid from their volleyball game. The infield turned into a volleyball gym. I had never been there since the 84 Olympic and that was an outdoor track where Mark Gorsky kicked some Russian World champ butts several times between 83 and 84. Now, I am itchy to get on that track and ride it again in this old age. Getting cert is about 150 bucks and the 20 monthly fee to ride the track. Bike rental is about 10-20 per month.
|
^^^ always wanted to ride the track and never did :( Not even sure if we've got a velodrome in FL. Need to check.

Well, we've got one in the Miami area! A competition 30-degree track and a recreational 10-degree track. I'm currently restoring a track bike (just painted it yesterday) but had it planned only for short jaunts around the hood. Now?? Hmmmm ....

There WAS one in the Portland area until a couple of years ago when the family that owned the land decided to cash in and sell it to a housing developer.
It was located on dairy farmland and in addition to the Velodrome there was an awesome cyclocross track. RIP Alpenrose. |
I remember the Mavic GL330 and GEL280 rims with continental sprinter 250’s.
Laced up with super record hubs and 32 double butted spokes. Usually running a straight block 6 speed. Heaven!!! Extra points for watching the dustcaps flying off those early look pedals in the off camber left hand turns. Not sure how many times I went around the state capitol in Madison wi. 0.6 mile criterium course. Did that a few times every year. And then there was Superweek. (Before the tour of America’s Dairyland). Life was easier then. And in much better shape. |
Fast forward 35 years or so.
Never figured I would produce something like this. Dad is all tingly and warm inside…. Last weekends WiCX series in Oshkosh. No podium this weekend. But he’s done a number of them this year on the MTB and a couple in cross. (He’s the young kid leading here). First CX season. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1696948716.jpg |

I love the brake handle idea and I'm going to steal it, but the it's the Geze sticker that caught my eye - that brand always reminds me of the Porsche 910 - and the only reason I know this bit of trivia is that I was talking to Gunnar Jeannette once while we looked at a 910 he'd restored and I remarked on the hood latches. (I used to ski, I began as a child when cable bindings were a thing and Geze was a top brand) Then, later, I read about a similar conversation between two completely different people as reported by Top Gear The Magazine; Crouched down behind the car you see above, I'm stumped. I have the nagging feeling I've seen this clip somewhere before, but right now I can't place it. It's not a regular car part, though. Ah, got it, it's the front clamp from an old wire ski binding - don't ask me how I know this, but I'm fairly sure no one else here can identify it. "Do you know what this is?" comes a voice at my shoulder. I stand up, ready to reveal my disturbingly in-depth knowledge of ancient ski equipment, but before I can fix my features to smug, he continues, "It's from an old ski binding. The engineers were having difficulty holding the engine cover of the 910 down safely, and, over dinner one night, Mr Piëch spoke about this to his good friend Mr Geze, whose firm made these bindings, and this was the solution." http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1696976358.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1696976989.jpg |

just popped up on fb marketplace. I was not even aware this was a thing.
The 1935/36 Monark Silver King- An aluminum frame. Look at the front sprocket teeth- Look at, well, everything! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1696981724.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1696981724.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1696981724.jpg |
Cool! I'm guessing the dipsey-doodle on the downtube holds 4 d cells for the headlight.
|
Evidently- I had no idea they even had d cells that long ago!
If I didn't live in the mountains I'd buy it. This will be an inspiration for a future build though...:D |
