That shouldn't have happened, he was wearing earphones and no helmet and was riding on the sidewalk, perfectly safe;)...is there a link I have to read the news article.

Cool bikes and all - but what about riding?
Been trying to get in as much riding as possible before the cold temps make it more difficult. Yesterday, did a 15 mile loop in the park system with the multi-use path. Time: 1 hour, 9 minutes; pace was 13.02 mph. Today, I hit the park again for a shorter stint - 11 miles in 50 minutes @ 13.5 mph. According to my splits, I actually achieved 15.06mph average on mile 2, and my slowest pace was 12.45mph. I know - slow and short - but I haven't been in the saddle in over 15 years, and my hybrid bike isn't really made for speed. So what type of distances and speeds do you folks see? How often do you ride? I am so glad I got back into riding - I've been enjoying it a lot - and I feel more energetic now too! -Z-man. |
I ride to and from work every day, and do most errands (grocery, hardware store, pub, etc) on the bike. So most of my riding is done in short loops around town, call it 3 to 10 miles. Some weekends I'll go for a fun ride, usually I'll do hill repeats at a local park, those might be 25 mile days. In the summer I also do longer rides, 50 miles, to prepare for the Seattle to Portland which is 200 miles (over two days for me). I don't tend to do long rides on a regular (e.g. weekly) basis year-round, because of lack of time. I'm thinking of getting a mountain bike, to increase the variety of my riding. In the heart of winter, which here means rain, dark and cold, I still ride to work and errands but don't do weekend fun rides (because they're not fun then, and there can be ice on my hill lap route). Instead I go to the gym's spinning class 2x week. Last winter I found spinning made me stronger, came into spring in better shape than the previous year. As far as speed, usually 15-20 mph around town, 25-30 for short (really short) bursts like trying to keep up w/ traffic, 10-15 on moderate hills. For a long ride on flattish ground, usually about 17 mph average. Your speed will depend not only on conditioning but on the type of bike, a road bike being significantly faster on pavement. This winter, try some spin classes, maybe do one of those free week trials at a gym. That way you won't lose the fitness you're building now, indeed you will keep building it.

Keep it up and you will be faster and stronger in no time. I only do road riding. Mostly on the streets. Some are done on very quiet without stops, some full of traffic. It really depends on how I feel. A very busy LA traffic street forces me to get off my saddle and pedal hard, almost spiriting making me strong. I will do a 30-40 mile loop if I can get out by 4pm during the week and be home for dinner with the kids. I live a mile up into the canyon, so there is no way but climb home when I already beat myself up on the flat land. There is a 4-5 mile climb on my route that I go up a couple times a month. My avg speed is about 18-22 (When I am in half way decent shape). In the past 2 months, I gone out twice due to my crazy work schedule. Weekends, I try and go out for a 40-50 mile ride and be home for lunch. I have been doing 40 miles of pizza in the past 2 months. |
