We have been in a campground in High Point all week . Not sure how far you are from there . It's been 98/99/100 since Monday . The campers AC runs constantly from noon until around 8:30 and we have it set to 80 degrees . Brutally hot !!!

It's amazing to me being a Michigan native living in Florida for 10 years how the body acclimates to the heat and humidity. I couldn't take anything above 80 deg my whole life, now 93deg/93RH is the norm all summer. I wouldn't say it's comfortable but not a big deal either. I usually work outside or in the garage or ride my bike a few hours a day and don't think too much of it! Good luck up there. I know family and friends in Mich are saying they can't even breathe when they walk outside

Get off my lawn!
|
I have lived in the southern USA all my life. I can mow my yard with temps in high 90s. I sweat like a race horse, and suck down a lot of water. I don't enjoy that, but the yard has to get mowed. I try to go out fairly early in the morning.
When we were in Savannah, GA in August, high 90s temps and high 90s humidity. The heat index, for the week was usually 135! It was like walking into a sauna just going outside. I had my car wash mitt and towels over near the AC unit, and they never did get totally dry. I had the AC cranked on my 911 on one trip, and the outside of the car had condensation on it like a beer bottle right from the fridge. Really!

He's in the Carolinas. I wouldn't say that but it used to be on his profile. So unless he moved....
The whole country is hot as well as Europe. I don't remember anything like this before, this widespread all at the same time.

Here in Bama, we have been under heat advisories all week. I have been off all week, summer shutdown, and have gotten very little accomplished due to the heat. I feel like my time off has been wasted by not being very productive, but I guess getting some rest might allow me to be productive in the future.

it was hot here a month ago. it has since gotten super cool with fog and moist-ness in the mornings. I wear a hoodie.
I went ocean kayak on the hottest day. coming out of the water, two Asian ladies spotted for me. and then one husband helped. the wife (I assume) asked me, "aren't you hot as heck in that dry suit?" I looked her deadpan faced, and said, "I could grow rice". I made the beach laugh. the lady asks, "can I introduce you to my sister?" then it was my turn to laugh. hahah..I thank the writers of Cheers for that response. (Norm said it) I love my weather deeply. love love.

Another 90/90 day here. (heat/humidity) Also a 3 t-shirt and 3-beer day.
![]() Pro tip: Never wear a cotton t-shirt with graphics or trademark ironed in. They just attract the heat. And a size larger shirt will feel better on a 90/90 day. Bell's Two Hearted or Bell's Hazy Hearted IPA is best for the heat. ![]() .

Currently 97 heading to 99 . Feels like currently 105 heading to 108 . Pavement in campground is so hot we can't walk the dog . Very little grass . Thankfully our lot is well shaded by trees . Will be glad to head home on Sunday .

It just amazes me the people in Europe are dying from the heat and people in the US are as well.
I grew up in the deep south, San Marcos, TX and Montgomery, AL and Oklahoma City for on year. Hawaii never got super hot. Never once did I get to attend a school with air conditioning. Now they close school if the AC units are not cooling. I remember sweat dripping from my nose onto test papers. I think of my paternal grandfather often in the heat. He was born on a farm in 1900, no electricity of course. When he was 20 he married my grandmother, and bought a "house" that was 12 x14 feet. No electricity, a hand pump for water, and a outhouse out back. It would be like living in my storage shed, only I have electricity out there. Then when grandma had to cook, she had to fire up the wood burning stove to heat the house up even more. During the dust bowl days, they could not open the windows or the doors as the house would fill with dirt. Grandpa worked for Armor and Co, cutting up animals. Imagine the heat and stench of an un-air conditioned kill floor, in the summer heat. No air blowing just lots of sweat. He survived and worked there from the day the plant opened to the day it closed. People were just tough back then. I can handle hot days fine if I have lots of water to drink. I did an HPDE ar Roebling Road, just outside of Savannah, GA. The heat index was just stupid, 130+ degrees. I drank a case of water and managed to have a little urination once. It was sure glorious to crank up the AC on the journey back to the hotel.

My Uncle on my Mothers' side did not have an indoor toilet. Us kids hated visiting them because of having to use the outhouse. He kept it clean and the stink wasn't bad...but it was still a new thing to us kids. A Sears and Roebuck catalog sat next to the holes. Needless to say...humidity wasn't that much of a factor back then.

It is 94 with a heat index of 104 here in Opelika. It's not so bad if you stay in the shade. I grew up on the Florida panhandle coastline and most of the time there was a bit of a breeze coming in off the gulf that made it not seem so hot. It has been strange weather this week with not only the heat, but we have had pop up thunderstorms that are moving from east to west, which normally then move in from the west. Some storms have been pretty severe with 40mph+ winds. So far, no storms here, just heat!!!

As to Glenn's comments on people dying, it isn't so much people being weak today, as people not adjusting their hydration. I am not sure why this is? The people who die seem to be older folks. Can't they run a cold bath? I am curious about this.
Back in 1984 I worked a summer in an Aluminum Mill. It was about 120F in most spots and much hotter near the Aluminum. I drank a LOT of water. I was fine. Today? I am a super wuss when it comes to heat. I will never own another home without A/C. |

I've also had periods where I spent most of my time in the summer (or winter) outside in the weather and other periods (these days) where most of my time is spent in AC. Our bodies acclimate to the conditions that we are in most of the time. I can be perfectly comfortable in 35º weather, to the point where I can be wearing a t-shirt. I can be comfortable in 95º humid weather. But if you picked up the 13-20 year old me that spent most of his time outside in the heat in the summer, and dropped me into the snow cold winter somewhere, I'd think I was going to die. If you snatched me when I was young and living in Japan, and dropped me into a Texas August day, I'd think I was going to die. I think what our bodies are used to affects how they react. There are marathons that are run in heat in the south and folks don't die. I remember reading about the London marathon one year where the temp was in the 80s and they doubled the medical staff on hand because they expected lots of medical issues. Because those folks aren't used to those temps, and certainly aren't used to pushing themselves to the extremes of running a marathon in those temps. That acclimation is why for hundreds of years folks lived just fine (relatively) without AC. Because they were used to it, and lived in it all of the time (and likely had homes designed to allow air-flow, and/or high ceilings, and other aspects of design centered around not having AC.

I lived in P'cola for several years when I was younger, and my parents retired to Milton (just east of P'cola). I lived in Tampa for many years when I was younger. My mom lived her last 15-ish years in Vero Beach. The breeze off of the Atlantic was MUCH nicer than the breezes off/near the Gulf. This has been a weird year for weather. I think our temps here in TX so far this summer have been quite a bit cooler than any of the last several years (by 15-20º). We've had good rain too (the trade off is humidity). And then I hear about my colleagues up in the NYC/NJ area having temps in the high 90s and 100+, and high temps in London (higher than here in Texas). I had heard early this year that we had switched from la niña to el niño this year, and the weather is certainly different from the last several years.
