do you collect anything?

i know a lady that collect snow globes. my sister collects those "day of the dead" figurines. my mom collects tiny elephant "things".

me..nothing. i'm asking about big time collections...stuff laid out on display at your home.

i know another lady that collected Hello Kitty junk. i was stunned when she actually got married.

GH85Carrera 02-01-2013 07:53 AM

Toenails.

gacook 02-01-2013 07:56 AM

I have a rather extensive collection of swords/knives/daggers and other Far East close combat weapons. Not on display because I haven't gotten around to building cases for them and haven't seen anything commercially available that I like for display purposes. I do have a couple swords hanging alone on the walls of my bedroom, though.

Drdogface 02-01-2013 07:57 AM

Strange...I knew a gal that collected those Day of the Dead things too...all Mesican I think. Really kinda spooky and she was too for that matter. Friend of mine has a ton of antique guns and military...his collection is in a very secure double locked display room. Neat stuff.. Me, mostly collect dog hair all over my wool shirts ;)

porsche4life 02-01-2013 08:03 AM

- Foreign paper currency
- Pressed pennies from tourist sites
- 1:18 scale model cars and Hot Wheels / Matchbox cars

Jrboulder 02-01-2013 08:33 AM

Magazines for guns I don't own and parts for cars I don't own.

KFC911 02-01-2013 08:35 AM

I don't, but one of my uncle's has one of the coolest collections (two actually). One is deer, racks, turkeys, and all kinds of mounts from when he was in Alaska many years ago. But the absolutely coolest is his arrowhead collection... hundreds (if not thousands) of them mounted in cases (which he keeps locked up) and has been collecting for over 50 years...lots of them from "family land" that date back 4-6 thousand years according to him (and he knows his stuff). The spring that feed "our" ponds has probably been there for eons...hence the huge amounts he's obtained there...I've only seen the tip of the iceberg.

varmint 02-01-2013 08:36 AM

books, couple thousand hardcovers. unknown number of paperbacks. starting to get creepy hoarder in some rooms.

many boxes of motorcycle parts.

imcarthur 02-01-2013 08:39 AM

I will admit to a few small collections but I am not really an active collector. I have some 'reputed' antiquities . . . a few Egyptian pieces, a small Coptic funerary cloth, a small Mayan piece . . . an old coin collection, a fossil collection from my youth, a few stone & clay Native American pieces from my sod farm year . . .

My favorite:

Vintage cymbals (32) and drums (5 kits.) Didn't realize that I also might have an addiction to collecting cheap guitars (12.)

john70t 02-01-2013 08:49 AM

Dust.
And old rusty brackets, twine, and parts for something long ago disposed of.

s_morrison57 02-01-2013 08:49 AM

I collect rocks/minerals and have a decent collection, I also collect food, it started in 1974 with the last x-mas orange, the one that nobody eats and it starts to dry up, I dried it slowly and thats where it started, I have 10-15 oranges, peppers, cherries, tomatoes, burnt hotdogs from a BBQ gone bad, b-day cake, I had KFC potato salad that was 10 years old before SOMEONE threw it out. Its a wierd thing to collect and every piece means something, like my sandwitch and cookies I had for lunch on the day of the last helicopter crash, it survived intact, the pilot and I were a bit bloodied and banged up, the chopper was a write off.

Antique tire ashtrays

Manufacturers send me samples of model trucks and tractors for review, so I have a bunch of them. Whenever I see an interesting piece of automobilia I pick it up.

i like to go collect money.

onewhippedpuppy 02-01-2013 10:10 AM

I would say cars, but I think you have to keep them to count as "collecting". I'd like to say guns, but the wife isn't fond of that concept.....

I have a really old one up at the barn I'll give you. PM me.

As far as collecting, books probably, more than I should given the space and weight. It is funny in that I do take comfort in them being there, can scan a title and remember the details of when I read the book and where I was.

Odd, that.

Nothing remarkable for me. My wife however is crazy about chimps and collects mechanical monkeys.

Militaria, medals/orders, trench art, clocks, interesting enough, pressed pennies/coins also, that I pressed myself. Also have significantly added to my beer glass collection while in Europe, but I actually use them so not sure they count.

I collect money.
IMO Too many people see money as only something to get rid of. Something that must be spent to be used.
I could never understand that.

Having money means having freedom and security and power. Spending money means giving up those things.
Knowing that I could pay off my house or buy almost anything or go anywhere or retire anytime I want is freedom.
Knowing that I dont have to worry about being able to pay bills even if something bad happened is security.
knowing that I could tell the boss to go take a hike if I wanted to without worrying about not getting a paycheck is power.

Buying stuff provides a cheap and temporary thrill but it's fleeting.
Saving money instead of spending it lasts a long time and the more you save the better it feels.
Plus the longer you save and the more you save, the faster the pile builds up.
Over the past year or so my 401ks have increased more than what I earned from my salary.
That's a good feeling.
