You know, after this happened, I've found new motivation to renovate the old girl. I'm gonna try to put some time aside this year to rebuild the motor, and give her a good rogering on the inside as well. She deserves it. 240k miles without much trouble. It's the least I can do.

Glad your story had a reasonably happy ending. Yes, seeing those flames and having the mental clock ticking about what needs to be done to can really get the blood flowing. I saved my 88 from a house fire about 3 years ago by pushing it out of the flaming garage.
Suprisingly, I have been complacent with replacing the fire extinguisher that I lost in the fire. Will fix that problem asap.

I keep a fire extinguisher right behind the driver's seat. Just in case.

Yeah, Cliff, I was pretty freaked out, but managed to stay focused and get the fire out. I even thought to disconnect the battery pretty quickly. Another 30 seconds or so, and I think it would have been ugly.

Good that you caught it in time. It is a helpless feeling when you see your car going up in flames.

Yeah, the kid could have just as easily drove off to work, and discovered the problem on the freeway. God knows what could have happened.

Damn, that's a butt pucker moment for sure. I went for years without a fire extinguisher in the garage, and sometimes not even in the house. Not smart. Now there's one on the wall in my garage and under the kitchen sink.

It'll really get your blood flowing! I was driving mine when it went ablaze. The cam housing gasket blew out slowly, so it went from smoke to flames over about a 20 mile span. After seeing the smoke, I checked it out, then made a few calls to get towed with no luck. It was Labor Day. I drove on. About 4 miles from home, I drove upon a wrecker and asked for a tow, but he said he was on call and could not help, so I kept going. At the next traffic light, he turns his lights on as to motion that there was more than just smoke. I didn't process his signal until I lost hydraulics about 2 miles later. Luckily, no one was out at that hour, except for a few out walking. Never will forget the look on the guys face walking his dog, pointing and waving, as I drove by in a Porsche on fire!
I made it to my destination where I knew a fire extinguisher was available, then the frantic rush to get it put out began. It happened so quick, and it's amazing how clear the thought process was, especially given the fact that I was terribly hung over. Water won't help, don't pop the hood and give it more air for fuel, grab keys, unlock office, grab extinguisher in the warehouse, put out the fire. It was a wild experience, and like you, everything is fine now.

Glad the damage was minor and nobody got hurt. I had a small fire in my Targa a few years ago. Driving with the kids when it dies a few miles from the house. About a minute later my daughter smells something burning and we see smoke coming out of the dash vents. Popped the trunk open and I see flames coming out of the fuse box. For some reason my instinct was to rip off my heavy sweater and with one swipe it put out the flames. Only damage was the relay sockets and replacing the fuse block.

We blew an oil line on our race car in an endurance race. This was the line from the scavenge pump to the oil cooler (full circulation system) and of course it blew right above the left heat exchanger. The driver dumped the halon system and put it out immediately with no further damage. On hour later, after a trip to a nearby hydraulic shop, we were back in the race.
Halon fire systems are awesome!

Big Mistake and a blessing in one statement:
"My son is using the car to get to/from work these days, and he comes in the house from the curb this morning where the car is idling, and says, "Dad, can you come take a look at something, something doesn't seem right."

You sound like a great dad, will you adopt me? (even though I'm pushing 50, grins)............most excellent reply.
