Never heard of it either but would seem to make sense. Looks quite lethal.

Legal? I'd say yes until some idiot, hand-wringing politicians whip up the uninformed masses.

Advisable? Absolutely not. All you need is one prosecutor to make the argument that you "manufactured extra-lethal ammunition" because you were some kind of psycho. Save it for when the zombies come.

Probably wouldn't work too well in a pump or semi auto...

I'll probably try this the next time my brothers and I get together with a couple cases of beer and a bottle of Jack.
Of course the youngest gets the "privilege " of pulling the trigger.

A few things:
.
- A mighty sharp knife to cut that shell so easily.
.
- That Barry fella's one damn good shot w/that scattergun.
.
- I'll supply the shells, gun, & sharp knife if someone wants to pull the trigger.

Given that safe, legal, factory manufactured rounds are available for self defense purposes, why in the world would you open yourself up to both criminal and civil prosecution by doing something like this?

Didn't we already HAVE the discussion on modded rounds?

Shotguns by definitions shoot everything from the kitchen sink to mothballs. Cutting the cartridge is hardly a felonious intent to harm....WTF, you fired at the guy.....

You are, of course, right. My 'right' is of no value when you have a zealous, leftist prosecutor trying to put you in prison for having the temerity to defend your property.

If you are worried about an over zealous lefty prosecutor move to Texas....oh wait, the landmark case WAS in Texas.

Either shoot the wanker, run away, throw down the "illegal" gun exposing your bum like a little prison punk, or wack his ass with a 9 iron.....

Carried or judged by six.....

What modifications to make a weapon more effective couldn't be exploited? Whether you loaded or purchased specialty high performance ammo (Would Buffalo Bore ammo cause additional liability), to special aftermarket sights, or trigger/action jobs, to polishing feed ramps to allow hollow point ammo to feed reliably, they all can be exploited as modifications to make a firearm more deadly. Choose your weapon and ammo to defend against what you believe is the bigger threat, the criminal threatening your life, or an over-aggressive attorney.

I do know - from experience - that small-mouth bass fishing with cut slugs is a waste of good ammo. Kind of fun though.

I would expect that cut slugs would make a messy flesh wound.

Anyone here remember the "Black Talon" controversary? Several lawsuits and enhanced prosecutions went forward because the "Black Talon" was more deadly than normal.

There was nothing "more dangerous" about the round. And a lot of misinformation was spread by the media on the round (Armor piercing, etc). It was a failry standard hollowpoint, marketed primarily to Law Enforcement. The anti-friction coating (a wax) caused the copper jacket to turn dark, hence the color black in the name.

It was "recolored" and remarketed as SXT. And presently PDX1 is almost the same. But these rounds don't sound as scary.

I'll use what the FBI uses. OO Buck. kills 93% 100% of the time. I just can't have their 14.5 " barrel

Sidenote I was taking with a gunsmith who said to use birdshot for HD! the guy was about 6' 8" and 320# I'm pretty sure that he would survive 8 rounds of birdshot

From what I've read, the bird shot suggestion is so that the shot will not penetrate walls. Unfortunately, it also will not penetrate the perp. At close range it creates a large shallow would. It will hurt, but not stop.

The bird shot is actually pretty damn good advice, Jim. At inside the home ranges, with the pattern opening up to no more than the size of your fist, the stuff is more devastating than a slug or a load of buck shot. #7 1/2's or #8's are perfect for home defense. Those 400-some little BB's really tear up tissue and create a wound that will never close back over on itself. Really, really nasty stuff at close range. Your big buddy would fold up like a cheap lawn chair...

I would think that if you used steel shot for this type of shooting is would cause a bulge in the bbl. at the choke.
