Most reliable laptop hard drives (SATA)

I'm going on a trip this summer, and I'm going to buy a hyperdrive colorspace for the trip.

You can buy the bare case or buy one with a hard drive. It's a lot cheaper to buy the case and a hard drive separately, so that's what I'm going to do.

So now I need to know what the reliable brand/models of 2.5" x .4" hard drives are.

So what about Seagate, WD, Toshiba, HGST, etc...?

I'm looking for 750GB or 1TB, and power utilization and heat are probably more important than speed (low power consumption and cool running are the goal after reliability) so no SSD or 7200rpm I assume.

It seems like there may be good and bad models in most of the brands, so that would be important too.

Nothing? Someone must have some opinions based on experience. But then most folks are probably going for speed these days which meant 7200 or these days, SSD.

They are all fairly equal.

But.... if you have one, you have none. If you have two, you have one.

Get two, and make redundant copies. After your trip, you can backup important stuff to them and swap them back and forth to an "off site" location - bank safe deposit box, friends house, etc.

Thanks guys. Once I get back, I have a hard drive and a NAS that I can backup to. This is pretty much only going to be for the trip.

My NAS is full of WD-Green.

Personally, I've seen more failed ATA WD drives than any other brand, hands down. They are the cheapest and, IMHO, there's a reason. I've also seen a number of dead Hitachi's. Go Seagate.

I'd been wondering who "HGST" was. I didn't recognize the name. I didn't guess that it was Hitachi.

Yes, we have been around awhile. IBM - Hitachi GST- HGST In a year or so we'll be WD.

I had and IBM years ago that was a good drive, and have heard good stuff about Hitachi

I hadn't ever hard of GST

I've also heard that some lines of WD are bad and some are good

My last couple of hard drives have been a mix of Seagate and WD. The only drives in the past that I have had trouble with were Maxtors (now Seagate.)

Most modern drives are of similar quality and price. I wouldn't have any problem going with either Seagate or WD. Just make sure the specs match up to the listed specs of 2.5" SATA ATA-5, 9.5mm thickness and you will be golden.

IBM sold the hard drive div to Hitachi which became Hitachi GST(Global Storage Technology) now just HGST.

In have a pile of dead WD, IBM, Hitachi, Seagate, etc.

Buy whatever is on sale with decent reviews on NewEgg.
