im not a guitar aficionado but it seems like he covers the base guitar and the lead in one.
Is that the magic?

A master of tone, touch and taste. And a hell of a composer.

And that, my friends, is how you play electric guitar. Great stuff. By the way, the album Knopfler did with Chet Atkins is called "Neck and Neck." As noted, it is a killer.

A most excellent way to start the day. I've always been a huge MK fan, I wished I had the balls to walk up and introduce myself when I saw him standing there at the Marshall Crenshaw concert, but I was too much in awe.
Neck and Neck is a favorite album, still gets a lot of play. Another under rated guitarist is Elliot Easton of The Cars. His solo on "Tonight She Comes" is right up there with MK's solo on SS as being concise and perfect. And RIP Rouxroux, he was always a great contributer to this forum.

I love this. I've been listening to him for most of my life (I'm 41.) I discovered Dire Straits in about 1984 during the brief period of my childhood when I watched MTV, and I saw the video for 'Money for Nothing'. I wore out my cassette of 'Brothers in Arms'. Once I got into him and started playing Dire Straits, it hooked most of the rest of my family, too. I'll listen to his music for the rest of my life, I reckon. My dad met MK on the London Underground once, which was kind of neat.

On 'Neck and Neck' during the song There Will be Some Changes Made MK mentions to Chet as an aside, "You've played before"...
Great stuff.

Have always been impressed with his ability on the guitar and composing.
When I mentioned his name to my wife she raised an eyebrow and I said he did the "Princess Bride" theme and then recognized who I meant. I try to emulate him but the best I can do is mimic his hairstyle.

I've been a huge fan of Dire Straights and Mark since 1978 when I was living in England and their first album came out. Some of the more popular stuff have grown tired for me but others have become even more endeared. And MK is a very underrated songwriter.
This is my favorite song of theirs Followed closely by

MK and Dire Straights are in constant rotation in my place. Never gets old. I find that I spin his stuff and seldom skip tracks; just enjoy it all the way through. I agree that they/he never seemed to get the proper credit, considering some of the other $hit out there that people go nuts over. I love his tone!

The knice thing about Mark Knopfler is that he evolved with age, mellowed a little, got even better at his craft and still favors the fans with great albums.

Watch Brian Johnson's "Life on the Road" episode featuring MK; it's very good, and you get some real conversation. Hearing MK say they quit at the peak of their success because, as he put it, "I was backstage one afternoon before a show and I saw a hundred people setting up, and I didn't know even one of their names" just really brought it home for me as to the man himself.
