JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -
Police with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said a homeowner shot and killed a would-be robber during a home invasion Wednesday night.

The shooting happened at a home on Oak Water Drive in the Holly Oaks area, just east of Regency.

There were six people inside the home watching a movie when they heard someone at the front door.

"Not even two seconds later, the door is getting kicked in and someone's yelling, 'Get on the ground, get on the ground, shut up,'" said one of the men inside the home, who did not want to be identified. "By the time I jump to the floor, my life flashes beneath my eyes. I hear a bunch of gunshots. I don't know who's shooting, and then silence."

He said they jumped to the ground and remained there for about one minute.

"I look up and there's a man on the ground and everyone else is on the ground doing the same thing I am, slowly looking up. To my amazement, my best friend Tommy saved our lives," said the witness.

The man named Tommy lived at the home and grabbed his 9mm from his bedroom when the intruders broke in.

The witness said he only saw two intruders but supposedly there were three. The robbery suspect who died -- later identified as 24-year-old Aaron Antwan Harris (pictured, right from 2011 booking photo) -- was transported to the Medical Examiner's Office. Harris was arrested in 2011 on a charge of driving without a license. He was also convicted in 2006 of burglary and sentenced to 10 years of probation.

Police were searching for the two remaining suspects Thursday morning.

The witness said there have been several burglaries in the area recently, and he wasn't surprised the home invasion occurred.

"There was a burglary right there. My car was supposedly almost broken in to. You can see marks on my car where someone took a crowbar or something," the witness said.

Another neighbor said her family's motorcycle was stolen on Saturday but it was recovered nearby.

"Just on Saturday, they found it up the street thrown in the bushes. They hotwired it," said Carol Powers. "I have infrared cameras and usually have them facing out to the street, but since the bike was stolen, now I have them facing the vehicles just to be safe."

Powers said there were some other break-ins down the street about one year ago, and she's often concerned about people passing through the neighborhood.

"I have seven grandchildren and they're usually out there playing," she said. "So we get worried about strangers in the neighborhood but usually it's real quiet around here, a real nice neighborhood.

Neighbors in the Holly Oaks area, just east of Regency, said that crime isn't unusual in their neighborhood. Neighbors told Channel 4 Crime Analyst Ken Jefferson about robberies and burglaries that have happened in recent weeks.

Time to move.

Motive will be an interesting factor in this case.

Why break into a house where people are home?

Not an easy target, and why bring guns (assuming the intruders were armed) if it wasn't personal?

While the merits of the story are true and I'm happy it turned out the way it did, the manner in which you present it comes across as extremely racist.
Good guys (white guys) kill 2 of the 4 bad (Black guys) that were home invaders. The race of the people is not relevant and really adds nothing to the story. I thought we left that way of thinking in the 70's

Well, the fact that Black on White crime is not being reported, and is increasing does make it relevant, as the Black guys targeted what they thought would be an easy (the white guys) target, and I guarantee had it been 4 White guys kicking in the door of 4 Black guys, with the same outcome, Bad guys die, you would see this all over the National news, and I would still see it the same way, guys who kick in the door BAD guys guys who defends his home, Good Guys. and the fact that 2 are still at large, yet the police chose NOT to post a discrimination doesn't help the public. As I posted in the Zimmerman thread, these types of crimes are increasing, and sticking your head in the sand doesn't make it go away, only divides.

It use to be policy to describe the criminals, but that isn't PC, and when people (of any race) aren't called out, it only makes things worse. Funny, and time there is an auto accident, or someone is hit by a car, if an SUV is involved, it is called out, but since some consider SUV to not be PC, it is OK to blame them instead of the idiot driving them..

Correct..it "USED" to be policy to describe race. Its not PC for a reason. By saying that the four bad guys were Black and the Four good guys were White, and that the good guys win again, your underhandedly saying that Blacks are bad and Whites are good. This is the exact mentality that leads to racial stereotyping. This way of thinking was prevalent in the 60's and 70's but not so much today anymore and its not healthy for us as a people. I'm actually somewhat surprised to hear this. That said, I do believe its perfectly ok to describe race when suspects are still at large of course.

Break into house=Bad guys, color doesn't matter, in this case, the house was targeted because the residents were White, sorry, but that is racist, but there is a reason the highest crime areas are in the Black community, where Black on Black is the #1 killer of Black youth, and in recent years (part thanks for this being ignored) it is spreading out of the Black community and other races.
