still more bass porn

I ordered one of these about a year and a half ago, and added the second one about 4 months ago when an open endorser slot came up. I'm still getting acquainted - have done a few gigs with them. The fretless is a keeper. The fretted is a hammer but came out a bit heavier than I typically like. Both are 34" scale and strung E-C. I'm trying to standardize on some aspects of my instruments - mostly 34" scale and 24-fret (or equivalent in the case of the fretless).

At any rate, the boys in Brooklyn make some crazy good instruments.

Very nice. I have a Soldano SLO 100 coming in the mail tomorrow. Traded my beloved ES-335 for it last week. Still got the jitters over that, but I am so far ahead on the deal, I had to do it. I will be in the market for another guitar very soon. Don't know what to get - ES-335, Les Paul, EBMM Axis, EVH Wolf. I'm down to three gig'able guitars and I'm kind of worried about that.

Yeah, the guys at Fodera are old-school artisans. They still carve things by hand. Both are neck-through construction. The fretless is 3-piece ash neck with ebony fingerboard. The body wings are chambered walnut with a walnut tone block. The top is walnut. The fretted is 5-piece maple neck with bubinga stringers, chambered walnut body wings, walnut tone block and the top is Brazilian rosewood.

The fretless ash neck is just crazy nice. Evidently they are starting to use red oak for necks as well. The walnut is a "standard" top. The Braz is hard to come by and is getting stupid-expensive. Plus you can't export instruments made with it. The wood is CITES certified but there are all kinds of crazy stories of instruments getting confiscated internationally. There is talk of instruments having to get passports...

What do all those knobs and buttons do?

On another note, I saw this bass at GC with slanted frets all the way up the neck. I took a photo and I meant to post it here for you all to explain to me, but I never did. You all must know about it, but if not, I will find the photo... Is this a gimmick or alternate tuning or what?

Probably a Dingwall (Dingwall Guitars). I briefly owned one but didn't dig it. The issue they are trying to solve is that as strings get thicker they need to be longer to maintain a consistent sound. If you look at a piano, you'll see that the bass stricks are thick and really long while higher ones are thinner and shorter. A typical bass has a single scale length (34" being the most common) so the strings tend to have a different feel and timbre. It is especially evident with a low B. A lot of 5-strings with low B run a 35" scale to get the B more "piano like" in tone, but then the high G string can sound thin.

So the fanned fret system is a way to equilibrate the tone and tension.

Wood is good!

That's a beauty. My prize fretless is a mere Godin A4 Ultra...but it goes "mwah" at the slightest provocation.

Seriously nice looking wood. I really like the Brazilian rosewood.
