Now in 993 land ...

Of course I'd bring it to the dealer. You just dropped $50k+ on a new car - $250 is very much in the noise. It isn't exactly an enthusiast's car - I'd feel different if it was a new GT3.

Our Toyota dealer wants you to come in every 5K miles and drop at least $100 for 5K mile "service". If anyone reads their owner's manual, you'll find a much different story. I understand where you live/conditions have an impact, but not even close to what the dealership wants you to do. I spent $269 for a Honda Accord 30K service, they changed the oil/filter and tranny fluid. Everything else was "check"..... Someone has to pay for those big new buildings!!!

Getting dirty every 10,000 miles doesn't sound to bad to me, it will help you bond with your car.

Nissan guy told me to bring in my daughters Rogue every 3 months for an oil change cause the oil turns into acid. I asked him how he could say that with a straight face. I laughed and left.
I didn't even get a price. There is a reason they are called stealership.

Yes please do it yourself, it's quick and easy. Get the oil, filter, washer and extra plug at the dealer as they probably have the best pricing (there's your bonding) and you may get 10% off being a PCA member (we do here).
The hardest part of the Cayenne oil change is getting all the underbody plastic off. Good luck

We were going to an independant, but they changed the oil twice without prior approval.
"It looked dirty". Both times (several weeks before) I had changed that oil with a factory filter, and dated the bottom. |

Just accessing the filters on a 993 to see if the stealer really changed them is almost as much work as doing the whole oil change. And they're painted black anyway, so it's hard to write on them. Ditto for the spark plugs. Accessing intake #6 takes as long as changing the other 11. Who's gonna know if the stealer skips it? If you don't DIY, find a reputable indy you can really trust. They're out there. I don't get the credibility or gravitas people give to dealers. Their techs are usually kids, fresh out of vo-tech and factory training class. Indies all worked at dealers before and have so much more experience. I wouldn't own a modern car out of warranty, so I don't plan to ever have to ask the stealer for goodwill coverage.

That is what I call a FREE oil change. All my repair requests are marked "check and report the cost before doing the work"

OK, I took it to the Stealer. It was kind of fun; seeing our salesman again, chatting with the 35 yr old new service mgr, etc....even paying was fun because the young lady was so cute and charming....also I was using my wife's VISA. When we got serious about buying this car to replace our Sequoia (and it is not a good replacement as it is to small, has poor storage, etc but sure is more fun to drive) I asked my wife "So how are we going to pay for this?" Her reply; "Well, I start collecting social security soon". I can't think of a better way to spend part of Her SS check! So FYI: Labor- $149 including 'Multi-Point Inspection Report'. Oil Filter= $24; Seal ring (washer?) $1.46; O-ring= $8.14 !?!?; Now here is the surprise.... Mobil 1 OW-40 10 qts at $6.49ea. That is not a bad price at a dealer. Of course they prob buy it in 55gal for a couple dollars/qt. Has anyone noticed WalMart has M1 in the "5qt Gallon" for about $22? And notice the oil filter, which I think is a cart., comes to about $33.50! That sux. jvm

I took the Corvette in for a check on the roof the glue that bonded the roof panels back in '05-'06 wasn't holding onto the magnesium frame work ( the cure was to add more magnesium to the frame for more bonding space! )
Anyways since the car was there I let them do a $100 oil change and inspection. A far cry from $250-500 that you guys are stating. The only thing that they tried pulling over on me? "I did the oil change and inspection PLUS I rotated your tires!" Really? you did? "YUP!" how did you manage to rotate tires when the fronts are 245/30/18's and the rears are 285/35/18?

Nice comments you guys... to the point. Just give in and enjoy? Well, off on a road trip. Fresno to Park City Utah...850 miles, one 13 hour day, cocktails crossing the salt flats. Personal speed limit; 90, because we have the Thule box on top. Just Me, Wife and Marley our Golden. Pics later. jvm
