Cell Phone Number Port Help

I made the decision last week to move from Verizon to Ting (Sprint Reseller). I ordered new phones and they arrived today.

Sprint tells me that my phone number is not eligible to port from Verizon. I contacted Ting and they told me this:

Quote:
I looked into the number and from what I could see the number is not eligible for transfer to Ting. I verified this with Sprint and they advising the port would not be allowed either.
I asked that you verify this also on the Sprint website which you were able to do. In terms of escalating, if Sprint are advising the number is not eligible they will not look into the issue.

Unfortunately it is dictated by Sprint what numbers we can bring over to Ting and if they do not allow this then we would be unable to do anything with it.
That being said I found something that could be of a great help.

If you could ask your current carrier to change your CSA to one that is a Sprint coverage zone.
Then we should be able to bring it over.
The weird thing is that my wife's phone number can be ported. We are on the same Verizon plan.

My phone number originated with Nextel, which I then moved to Sprint, and then Verizon.

My wife's phone number originated with U.S. Cellular, which she then moved onto my Sprint account, then moved together to Verizon.

Any ideas on how I can get my number moved to Ting (Sprint)? Any idea what a CSA is?

Your current provider has to release your number... just call 'em up

Sometimes a carrier is waiting for you to call to request the change and won't allow it if the new carrier tries to make the change.

CSA - Carrier Service Agreement?

no idea.

Verizon/Sprint: Can't port numbers "over state line" (out of state area code) ??? [Archive] - SprintUsers.com

The above discussion gives a hint about the issues involved. But you probably need to talk to whoever is helping you at Ting to really get the story.

When I moved from the Bay Area to Portland, and wanted to switch from Verizon to AT&T while keeping my existing California mobile number, many AT&T reps told me it was impossible. Finally a clever rep said "Numbers are not portable outside of the local area, so the system needs you to be in the Bay Area for us to grab your existing Bay Area number from Verizon. So, we'll say your address is this McDonalds in Oakland. Okay, it went through, we have the number. Now, we just change your address to where you actually live in Portland." I was full of admiration.

Thanks for the help guys. You may have solved the problem.

After calling Verizon, it seems that my old address was still associated with my phone number. My new address was on the whole account and on my wife's phone number. It has been corrected and I'm waiting for the updates to course through the system.

Found out that because my phone number originated as a Nextel number and went to a different carrier, Sprint has some problem with bringing it back that requires manual intervention. Because I am not moving to Sprint proper, they see no reason to fix the problem.

Can you move to Sprint with no contract, then dump them for Ting?

Why $140? Well, anyway, isn't there a grace period for a new cellphone service? Suppose you sign up w/ Sprint, have them make whatever change is needed to pull the number over, then cancel within the grace period and move to Ting? Getting complicated but there might still be a way.

Port the number to google voice, $20.

Set up new service with new number on new provider.

Forward old number to new number.

Wait 30 days and add (port out) old number as additional line.

Cancel new number.
