Luggage...

I go through a carry-on roller about once every 6 months. I'm looking for a nice leather bag that also rolls if I need it to and one that I can put in the over head - has to be able to hold a suit jacket as well as a few changes of clothes, shave kit and a pair of shoes.

Tall order but I'm willing to shell out the cash. Any ideas?

Unfortunately this one doesn't have wheels, but you CAN wear it as a backpack if need be. And you'll get a lot more than 6 months out of it. This is serious leather....

It's not leather, but I have a "Ricardo" hard case (polycarbonate) four-wheeled suitcase set that includes a 21" carry on which fits in all but the smallest overhead compartments. I believe my set is the "Roxbury" set.

Carryon: (Mine is a more subtle grey color):

The carryon has a clamshell design, and the two compartments are separated by a zippered cloth flap. One side of the carryon has provisions for a jacket suit:

One downside of this case is that its clamshell design makes it a bit difficult to get something out of the case quickly -- a little side access pocket would be very useful.

I know it isn't exactly what you are looking for, but it works very well for my travel needs.

I have an osprey carry on that I've almost weekly for going on two years now. When I need my suit I've got an eagle creek folder that it fits in and keeps it wrinkle free.

Just go buy the appropriate Tumi...I have had one for years, mine has rollers and a backpack option. It is tight for a jacket, but it is light in weight (for what it does) and there are some good packing assists to get your shirts and pants in well.

Durable as all get out, lots of pockets, well designed.

Expensive

Look into this company. I have had mine for 25 years and it holds up great. Had to have handles replaced on my briefcase after 22 years - No charge and good for another 20+. This stuff will outlast me.

Have some Saddleback items as well, but Hulme is more "luggage like". Both excellent quality.

I was in this boat a few years ago, and looked at the Tumi's and Victornox and went with the Victornox (or however its spelled). I have been very happy with it and probably have 400,000 miles on it or so and I haven't had to replace anything.

It is the same size and looks similar to the one Nota posted. Be prepared to spend some $$ on a nice one no matter what you get.

Saddleback makes fantastic stuff. Don't think they offer a roller though.

Back in the dark ages - perhaps when a forum member previously known as Lubemaster was no longer present on this site - another thread was discussing this:

Is this to carry your pipe collection?

Just check the warranty on each item above and buy the longest warranty. Your credit card may extend warranties also - mine does.

Had exactly the same problem. Need a roller / carry-on / suiter (garment bag). I considered:

Tumi Alpha:

Wheeled Carry-On Garment Bag - Tumi

Victorinox East/West:

Victorinox Luggage - WT East/West Carry-On Garment Bag

Briggs & Riley Baseline:

Carry-On Wheeled Garment Bag, U174, Baseline Collection | Briggs & Riley Official Site

For me the problem with most carry-ons (except the 2- or 3-fold true garment bags) is that the suit shoulders get folded/pinched in because the bag isn't wide enough. I narrowed down to the three above because they: 1) carry suits 'width-wise'; 2) are long enough to not pinch suit shoulders; and 3) use the full length of the bag to accommodate suit width. Plus they're nearly bulletproof.

I ended up choosing the Victorinox and am very happy with it. Got mine from Altman Luggage:

Luggage, Carry On Luggage - Altmanluggage.com

They're currently running specials on some items, are offering an additiona 10% off, and free shipping (at least at these price points).

You're doing something wrong. My dad travels every week and does not burn through bags like that.

Tumi is great but pricey. I have a travel pro bag that is great and holds up very well. My dad has had the cheaper version of travel pro (Atlantic) and has had it for years while traveling 30+ weeks per year.

For German (or Canadian) made, take a look at Riwoma. They make polycarbonate and aluminum luggage. Stupid expensive but supposedly top of the line. All the other brands including Tumi (but not the made in USA Eagle Creek and similar) are now made in China; if that's a consideration.

Maybe most, but Briggs & Riley still made in Wisconsin I'm pretty sure.

Why leather of all things? I'm a reformed consultant who used to travel a lot domestically and internationally, I have a pelican suitcase and a Halliburton carry on which have about a bazillion miles between them and, while they have certainly become scuffed and dinged, they still work perfectly and have a pleasing "travel patina" to them.
