Stool experts: Need toilet recommendations

Calling all PPOT plumbers and home improvement experts:

Our house was built in 2010 and the builder's grade toilets we have basically clog with anything more than three squares of toilet paper. I'd like to install better toilets... Getting tired of plunging toilets.

Any suggestions for new stools that are good quality and won't break the bank too badly? I need four of them. I can install myself just looking for the best brand/price/quality. I looked at Toto but they are spendy (north of $500 each)!

I just replaced a POS made in Ecuador toilet in my condo with an American Standard one-piece toilet. So far, I like it.

widgeon13 10-27-2013 04:39 AM

We have Toto's and I'm amazed at what they can take at times. In ten years never clogged!

Westfield 10-27-2013 04:45 AM

Toto

I have the most inexpensive toto ~$300 and have never had an issue. 1.2 gal/flush.
I almost went ultra cheap at Costco with some other brand but then read a bunch of bad reviews.

mreid 10-27-2013 04:50 AM

Sorry, but Toto is the best I've used even in that price range.

Well, there was that one Korean toilet with all the extra features...

mattdavis11 10-27-2013 05:07 AM

I can't recommend a preferred brand, but make sure it's elongated. There's nothing worse than pissing on your underwear/floor because your you know what won't fit in the bowl. Height is another to consider, tis no fun when your nut sack touches water.

mreid 10-27-2013 05:11 AM

This water is cold.

Yeah, it's deep, too!

rfuerst911sc 10-27-2013 05:54 AM

American Standard I think it's called a Titan IV or something like that. I installed one earlier this year it say's on the box it can flush a basket of golf balls and I believe it. I have yet to clog this beast, I don't flush until I stand up I'm afraid it will rip off my nad sack !!!

Chocaholic 10-27-2013 05:58 AM

Suggest a visit to Home Depot following a double-cheese burrito at On The Border. Bring a newspaper and try out 3 or 4 display models there on aisle 12.

Wouldn't buy a car without a test-drive, would you?

lindbhr 10-27-2013 06:01 AM

American Standard Champion 4 works very well. I paid about $250 at Lowes. I'll buy another when we remodel the last bathroom.

EarlyPorsche 10-27-2013 06:16 AM

I have a champion 4 and I don't think I'll buy another. While it doesn't clog, it has a very weird tank to toilet mount so when you lean back (stretching between magazines) the tank moves behind you. Also the height of the bowl seems too high compared to other toilets. The mechanism in the champion is nice and basically funnels all the water out of the tank as fast as possible. High velocity flushing without the pressure tank.

billybek 10-27-2013 06:18 AM

Buy the one piece...
Champion 4 Elongated One-Piece Toilet from American Standard

mpeastend 10-27-2013 06:38 AM

Don't buy a Gerber! We have a low-end one for a spare bathroom...same issue you have. I tried to "turbo" it by raising the tank waterline to give more flushing power. It just succeeded in send poop water into the kitchen downstairs. Hope Gerber goes out of business. Worst. Toilet. Ever.

Watch some of these videos...............American Standard toilets ROCK! Epic flushing power! Dual Flush Toilet - YouTube

I forget the make of the toilets we had installed last year at our rental condo(+50 year olds). The previous ones were plugging a lot. We had senior toilets installed. They sit higher and so do you! They were not cheap but apparently are more efficient
and the tenants have not complained.:)

Stool experts?

The Kohler toilets in our new home are amazing. We just moved into this place 2 months ago. It made me realized just how bad the toilets were in our old home. It was a crappy situation.

dad911 10-27-2013 08:18 AM

Toilet ratings: Terry Love's Consumer toilet reports, a report and reviews on toilets

Haven't used a plunger since I switched to TOTO about 7 years ago.

+1
Gerber is crap. Toto is a good unit, but I think it's made in china.

Steve Carlton 10-27-2013 08:25 AM

Not in Kansas anymore?

VINMAN 10-27-2013 09:23 AM

There's only one choice.

The Ferguson!

Whatever you are considering, take a look at the siphon ( the outlet from the bowl to the connection). It should be a smooth "S" bend. Many cheap loos have a sharp right angle in there that invites a blockage. Think exhaust header vs cast iron manifold.

Phil

I replaced one of mine in a water closet about 6 months ago. I'm not interested in fancy toilets. To me a toilet is a toilet, so I went for the Aquasource AT1203 at Lowes for $100 on the Consumer Reports recommendation. It works very well, flushes well, seems to keep itself clean as far as complete flushes are concerned. It's a little higher to sit on compared to the other three I have.

Nickshu 10-27-2013 01:31 PM

Thanks guys. Will look at Toto and American Standard. I agree on Gerber.. That's what my current toilets are.

Other THREE…jeeze …that's a lot of crappers :D

Nickshu 10-27-2013 01:51 PM

Those American Standard videos are awesome! 2 pounds of kitty litter... Yep, 25 golf balls... Yep. 3 pounds orange peels... Yep.

Maybe it's overkill but after three years of frustration with our old toilets these things are just what we need!

$410 each at HD. Time to go shopping.

rfuerst911sc 10-27-2013 01:52 PM

Champion 4 is what I installed. It is an awesome crapper !

WHAT !! Not available for sale in Ca or Tx…. WTF !

Steve Carlton 10-27-2013 02:23 PM

What was wrong with the Champion 3?

trekkor 10-27-2013 02:38 PM

I was just about to start this very topic.

I hate my toilet.

It can take up to four flushes to empty the bowl.
Even just paper.

Is does not develop a consistent swirling siphon.

Sometimes if work fine though.Ii can't explain it.

genrex 10-27-2013 02:43 PM

I don't know about you folks, but in our house we don't use the toilet for flushing golf balls or orange peels. I think any real test of a toilet's flushing capacity has to involve one's mother-in-law, because flushing capacity depends on two crucial factors that only a mother-in-law can consistently provide... thickness and length of the sample, and excessive use of toilet paper.

Enough said. :(

Champion 4 will suck down the MIL and then some ! You can't go wrong with this bad boy.

KT

Now design makes that obsolete due to flow rate or restrictions. Get a Toto G max and be done with it.

look 171 10-27-2013 02:52 PM

Good toilet like Toto, glaze their trap way. Other do not.

Ha, I get it, very good.

Being a big time s*****ter I use Duravit. It's the Porsche of toilets.

Nostril Cheese 10-27-2013 04:26 PM

I have this toilet. Yes, it works as well as shown in the video. I drop some massive logs..

Toto is the only way to go.

VINMAN 10-27-2013 07:46 PM

I installed a HD Glacier Bay dual flush 2 yrs ago. Very happy with its performance.

Mahler9th 10-27-2013 09:14 PM

After reading some threads on these forums and a couple of toilet review sites I bought and installed a Toto Drake model that has the Sanigloss coating. Amazon.com was the source. 1.6 gpf version. Replaced a 15 year old Kohler 1.6 gpf toilet. Very happy with this change... should have done it years ago.
