After owning a 924S that I bought for $500, then a 560SL that I bought for $4,000 I agree with 1990C4S. Even if you enjoy wrenching on things at some point in the middle of a frustrating job you realize that you could have just bought a better one and come out the same without spending all that time in the garage.

I think the sweet spot is something in the middle with a maintenance history, unless you're looking for a track car. For that a cheap one would probably be perfect since it'll be apart to modify the car anyway. It only took me 11 years to learn that when people said there's nothing more expensive than a cheap (whatever) they were right!

Several years ago I bought a 2000 996 C2 with 95k for $14k. New IMS, fresh clutch, great mechanicals. It needed a little cosmetic TLC but was my daily driver for a year. There are great deals to be had on these cars, especially if you don't mind a little tinkering.

I don't mind tinkering with a car, but my days of major work or lots of work are over.

I'd rather pay a little more up front to get a good healthy car, than one I spend every weekend on.

My 930 was set up for the track and while that was great, it wasn't that much fun on the street. I don't think I want to go down that road again. Getting a car for cruising and weekend trips is the idea now.

So what do you guys feel that value on a broken early 996 would be? Im looking at one that is steaming out the overflow and has intermix. runs good with no noises. Don't believe that AOS is the issue, so assume cracked head, and gaskets and misc while you are in there...
This is sort of in the ball park of what I am looking for . I wanna cheap project car.
Once the ims breaks, or there are broken internal parts, it gets a lot more risky, but running cars with intermix issues are a different animal , at least in my book .
Assuming I can go in, replace a head , and gaskets, ims, and clutch while the powertrain is out. I figure 3-4k out of pocket for parts, my labor is free, and remember, I live for the next project.
They seem to be really taking a dive $ wise this season. In casual searching, I'm seeing lots of sub 10 cars, and cars at 14-15 not budging .

An iffy engine in a decent car should be $6-7k max. I would be all over a 996 like that.

Of course he feels it is worth a little more , but we are close. I think it could be a good deal if bought right . I would also know exactly what I had after it went back together .

My new ride. And yes I called it affordable pricing, with common known issues all 996's have.

I've drooled over wide body Pcars since the mid 80's. Now a C4S. wow that AWD is impressive in corners.

Now, after only 72 hours of ownership, I'm on cloud nine like I'm sleeping with Morgan Fairchild in the playboy mansion everything I slip into her soft supple moist leather after I've rub her with oils, lubes, and lotion everywhere inside and out.

first night of ownership and I stayed up with her till 1:00 am. Is that called foreplay with my new Courtesan?

Nice choice :-) Looks familiar. I've put a few thousand miles on mine in the last few months and a couple of days at the track using a bit of a soft touch. Its' bone stock and I don't want to abuse it but I've been impressed by how it responds. Enjoy!

This is the sort of car that strikes me as 'cheaper' than a 'dirty' $10k car...in the long run.

That's a nice one, having all that cooling work done is nice, it was a pain in the butt when I did it.

How to sleep with your Mistress and not get caught

True Story.

1) Less than two weeks ago I buy a 996 Pcar on a Wednesday after the PPI at a shop. Go over car fully brakes/suspension check-out that weekend.

2) Then 1 week of feeling out handling comfort zone of the awesome slightly understeer very neutral AWD in the Porshce 996 ( 3rd gear is a dream on twisty canyon roads ) Front end doesn't wash out it pulls right through any corner with no hit of over steer.

3) After 10 days ownership, took it on an out-of-state 550 mile road trip to Portland International Raceway on a gorgeous Pacific Northwest Day. Flogged on it finding it's limits. The PSM (Porsche stability management) system was nice to have some times when I over-cooked it too hot into a corner.

A full DE / Lapping day event. Between 5 sessions in my car for novice class, and another 5 twenty minute sessions in Jeff's advance class race prepp'ed early 911, I got in a total of around 200 minutes of track time that day.

I called it our honeymoon together, the car and I bonding. My ribs are still sore from Jeff's 5 point harness's. My seat conforms well to my butt now.

I love the AWD and C4S wide body.

Squeal for me tires, Ah said SQUEAL. what a good track day. She's a keeper after two weeks of ownership.

Here's a short entertaining 3 minute video of some little Carreras playing around on the track. Note the 100 foot braking markers at the end of the straights and how fast they come up.......Brakes = Good.

Wow Dave, nice video. How was the handling accelerating through the turns? Any oversteer/understeer?

VERY neutral.

PSM is your friend.

Higgin's my driver Yoda-san says I experience premature Apex. Coddling mother hen Jeff is.

hey we all have our off line days in the bedroom, it was my first grub-tolo dance with my new girlfriend.

The AWD is a god-send. I've got other track days in my 911SC. This was the first day at Portland for me so I was learning the line.
