30K is getting ballpark close to a TT. IMO that's big $ for a 996. My advice would be to get the exact car you want with all upgrades and documented maintenance completed. Even small things, trim, wheels, tires, suspension can all quickly add several $Ks to the bottom line.

Where are you located?

No, I'm just seeing more high-mileage examples coming up that show their age and also seeing each price barrier fall in a downward direction. Plenty of $10-12k early 996s now, when I bought mine for $10k in 2007 it was considered the deal of the century by some. It would be a ho-hum deal now.

They may be a lot of car for the money but an early 2000s Mercedes S-class or BMW 7-series is a lot more car, if you're talking about complex engineering and features. Those cars will also be $3-4k with another spike in fuel prices.

Me? I could care less what they go for.

I don't look very often in CA, but in the midwest a $10k 996 is a non-running car generally speaking. I've seen a few in the $12-14k range but they were either super high miles, totally beat, salvage title, or some combo of the three. It's still hard to find a cosmetically decent one in good mechanical shape for less than $15k, regardless of mileage.

That's probably not a good idea, Matt. At least based on your track record. You might need the cash for your next purchase.

Just as recently as 2 weeks ago I did not find that to be the case Denis. Perhaps you have access to local cars that are not advertised? Cali appears to be ground zero for all things Porsche and doing a quick search 100 miles in range from SD I came up with ~ 6 cars that are asking under $20K - the cheapest being $2K more than your high number. What I do see are a bunch of delusional sellers who think their 50K-70K mile early 996 is worth mid $20s or better. LOL.

Yes I have some skin in this game and would like the prices hold where they are - but then I didn't buy mine as an investment.

If you think your search revealed delusional sellers, do an Autotrader search on 1981-1989 911's in a 50 mile radius of 91320. Unbelievable what some of these folks are asking....

On the other hand, i drank the Koolaide too and searched 996/turbos. They are the best cost/value deal out there right now.

One thing that I have noticed, is that the price for used motors has been slowly coming down. I have been starting to see early boxster motors for $2500.00 and have seen a few high milers, that still run good for as low as $1500 . Have seen a few running 3.4 996 motors advertised for as low as $ 3 k.
This is starting to make buying a 996 with a broken drive train a little more attractive to me.

I believe they are too...just hard to imagine the flagship car for such a marque brand is this low. I feel like the power in my 968 is great and we're talking 65hp+ more here!

From what I've been hearing there's a pretty big delta between asking and selling price lately.

That's a polite way to say it. It's a buyer's market for nearly anything right now.
