I get 42mpg on my diesel, I would be spending another $50/week in a 996. And the price of fuel is only going one direction.

Obviously I need a new job.

Hmmm.

It's worth 20 MPG to actually enjoy driving my car.

Stumbled upon this, which is the opposite of an affordable 996: [Cars - For Sale] 2001 Porsche 911- 996 C2 - Classifieds - For Sale, Trade, Wanted - RennTech.org Forums

2001 with 49k miles for $33k, YGBSM. Some basic bolt-on mods on an otherwise low-option car. Pretty sure I'd rather have a C4S or 997 for that price. Someone is smoking the good stuff.......

Search through the local Craigslist turned up this one, which is sporting some, shall we say, interesting mods.

It's not often that you see an engine swap to REDUCE HP.

The dash is OEM 996, but that instrument hood is inexplicably red.

I'm guessing he was an IMS victim. So the only sane thing to do would be replace it with an engine even MORE likely to die. What could go wrong!?

I think the 996 is a great example of a car that has pricing based on the simple fact that we're all refusing to pay more than such low prices for these kind of examples- there are other markets out there where the cars SHOULD by all means be cheaper but they are traded at ridiculous prices still because people keep paying what sellers are asking!

Now, if everyone would start bashing 997 Turbos until we can get those prices down to around $30k, that would be great.

My dream world has the 996 GT3 and TT down at about $20k.

That really tends to happen when the cost of owning and maintaining presents a very bad ROI. I suspect 996's would be more expensive if the IMS time bomb never existed. 928's are similar. Cool car but very complex and costly to own...for most people.

It's the perceived 'high' risk of a catastrophic failure, the fact that the vast majority of people do not consider the IMS repair a 'reasonable undertaking', and the fact that they really are old cars now. Most of the cars we are looking at are almost 15 years old, and we are not looking for a summer cruiser, these are daily drivers.

Lots of supply, not a lot of demand ain't good for prices.

The best $20K (purchase + upgrades) I've ever spent on a car. I love the negative press...

Beautiful car Mark. I remember driving your red SC on a visit to Dallas several years ago. If memory serves, I was looking at a car for sale there that never came together.

I texted the guy in the ad I posted a few days ago. Car did not have IMSB addressed, which is not so bad, but the owner insisted he knew more about Porsche's than me and that I didn't know what I was talking about in that regard. IMSB? What's an IMSB?

Hey Mike - That's frustrating do deal with people that know everything - even though I do ;-)...

I didn't let the lack of IMS upgrade bother me as I want to have a full service done anyway. My clutch had some life but I had it replaced anyway. The AOS was seeping and clutch slave was wonky, so that got done as well. I really enjoy the way the car drives. Hope you find yours soon.
