Sounds like the buyer got a great deal, if he/she can do the work themselves.

Buyer is taking the car to the local dealer for the tranny seal repair ($2K parts and labor, 1 year warranty). Caliper repaint is $200 per corner at the best auto body paint shop. Head unit can vary wildly, but can do from $100-$500 installed. The other things are small that he can do himself. Tires (Michelin Pilot Sport) will be close to $2K installed/balanced/aligned). This was my second 996, both of which I bought knowing they needed TLC. I stupidly got scared by the IMS/RMS fiasco. Heck the 99 I used to have is still around and all it has required in the last six years since I sold it has been regular consumable items (brakes, tires, oil change)!

996s offer the best bang for the buck for 911s, and I would dare say even against other brands, but I'm just tired of having nagging issues all the time. Seems like everywhere I look, there is always something wrong with any car I am interested in. 997.1 are plagued by the same potential engine issues as the 996, except that it's even harder to replace the bearing. 997.2 apparently have some carbon build up due to DFI and PDKs are not as bulletproof as people think. Did research on Audi R8, and it too has its common issues. The same thing of a Ferrari 360 and the 430. Heck, even my wife's Audi Q5 now has the dreaded oil consumption issue that plagues earlier models.

Cars that have not given me issues? The 2002 Nissan Pathfinder I sold a couple of years ago. Now my daily driver is a Hyundai Santa Fe and even though it only has 20K miles on it, thing just runs with no issues (but it's boring as hell!).

You have to wonder though, why doesn't he cite any diagnostic work done? You don't just dump what would otherwise be a $50k car for $30k without trying to fix it. My serious concern would be that he rolled the dice, found out it had a major engine issue, and is trying to get out. Though even with an engine rebuild you would probably still be ok on value.

Especially if you could DIY.... If you knew a wrench nearby to do a thorough PPI, it might be a worthwhile gamble...

Hell, I bought that pickup with a "bad transmission" that turned out to be a plugged fuel filter. Some people don't know jack about cars, and don't bother to try to figure it out...

My favorite color! It has woodgrain, probably owned by an old guy that never drove it hard either.

Black Turbo X50 package. Gerber is well regarded in the Seattle area. Not familiar with TRED though.

"Slight oil leak (not even 1 qt per oil change) and airbag light is on"

Haha - it leaks less than a quart between oil changes - how nice! Airbag light is also not going to attract a lot of people. In my book that's a potential non-pro repair of an accident that blew the bag.

The car is 15 years old now ... I'd be scared of that car for over 10k ...

My new ride. And yes I called it affordable pricing, with common known issues all 996's have.

I've drooled over wide body Pcars since the mid 80's. Now a C4S. wow that AWD is impressive in corners.

Now, after only 72 hours of ownership, I'm on cloud nine like I'm sleeping with Morgan Fairchild in the playboy mansion everything I slip into her soft supple moist leather after I've rub her with oils, lubes, and lotion everywhere inside and out.

first night of ownership and I stayed up with her till 1:00 am. Is that called foreplay with my new Courtesan?

Nice ride, ok, you going to tell us what you paid?? C4S is a bit out of the beater 996 range.

Has anyone looked at a $10-15,000 996?

I imagine the car needs work - scratched paint, tired interior that need work, etc.

Would a $15-20,000 996 be a better deal? Possibly better maintenance and condition?

That has been my thought so far, the low end cars are not worth the money. A well looked after $18k car is better than a high mileage neglected $14k car.

But I would still like to try a cheap cheap cheap C4S as a winter car....
