Pull-Ups Vs Age
I am interested in something. If you are interested in helping me figure this out -
Please state: 1. The maximum number of pull-ups you can do, AND 2. Your age in years. No need to get too technical in defining "pull-up". Not negatives, not assisted. Can be palm out, palm in, palms facing each other, whatever you like. It has to be in 1 standard Earth gravity. As for "age", just regular old age in Earth years is fine. |
21 continuous. Couple more if I take a break.
45 |
I'll start.
0 And I'm 54. |
There is a bimodal distribution.
Huggies at 2-3 and Depends later on. |
I'm 59....can also do zero.
I think in my prime....when I was in my early 30's....I could still do zero.:D When I was in 7th grade, I could do 10. Although have been very athletic throughout my life, I've never had good upper body strength (played tennis, basketball and swam). Where's that fit in the bimodal distribution?! :D |
Depends... What caliber of gun is the guy who's making me do them holding? ;)
|
5-6. 47 and do no exercise but ride a bike.
|
I'm hitting the double-nickle in February. If I start now and really work at it I might get up to zero by then.
Never had the pull-up gene. |
3 at 71, but I don't do any specific physical training that involves that set of muscles. I do a decent amount of digging, carrying, lifting, & hauling working around my place though. At our Thanksgiving get together yesterday, I did climb a 15 ft. climbing rope - using my feet to help. Of the half dozen who tried it ranging from 22 to 50 (excluding me) one of the twenty four year olds did it on the second try & the 22 year old did it without using his feet to help. The effort was quite a contract for me, since I set the school record for the rope climb in the ninth grade.

Between the age of 15-30 I could routinely do 20 pull-ups. I still have an active job and lifestyle but at 57 I haven't addressed a pull-up bar in 10 years. My guess is significantly less than 20. Maybe 5-8?? I'll have to test this on my next visit to the fitness park.
|
In all seriousness... When I was climbing regularly, I could grab a door frame and bust out 5-10 pretty easily... Hell on the ol fingers though.
|
I can do 0 pull-ups at 51. Shoulder injuries in my younger years combined with arthritis today means I can barely raise my arms above my head. Totally sucks.

I just tried Sid's door frame idea (he's right re the fingers).
Did 5, will be 61 in a week. Jim |
24 last count.
Just turned 49 last week. |
I cannot do any pullups - not tried lately. But I can hike 30 miles in a day which I did last August to celebrate my 67th birthday. My heart rate was reaching in the 180's climbing hills as verified by my portable gps. Doc says my heart rate max should be in 110-120 range LOL. So I would consult your doc on what your max heart rate should be reaching doing these pullups or any kind of exercise.
Markus could offer some insight or guidelines on max heart rate. Anybody else or cardiologists have info on pushing the limits with exercise? |

I am 46. I did 20 at the gym today after reading this post.
I rarely do more then 10 of anything at the gym, so 20 is a lot of reps for me. When I was a Marine a little over 20 years ago 20 pull-ups was the standard. Last year I helped my girlfriends son join the Marines. He started out at 21 not being able to do a single pull-up. After six months of working out with me he was up to 10-12. There are a few other kids at the gym trying to get into The Corps. None of them started out doing any pull-ups either. They are both pushing ten now as well. |
I was born before physical fitness was invented so.......
|
At 48, it's been awhile since I felt the need to try, but I bet I could still do 3-5.
|
About 6 on a good day. I'm 48.
When I was 20ish and in the Army I could do 20 easy as part of the physical fitness test. |

57 But, I am 6'4" and 225lbs., and in great shape. Weight to strength ratio matters. My youngest brother just turned 50. He can do 20. He's 6' 1" and weighs 180. |

Amazing!!! . I'd say zero today. I'll be 68 in Dec. At the club, I do Lat pull-downs on the machine - that's about it. I worked out heavily in my youth...I was big into sports. I used to do pull-ups behind my head as well as under my chin. I had a Bruce Lee body. In boot camp (18 yrs. old) we climbed that rope (I don't know - 40 ft., maybe)...most guys used their legs wrapped around the rope as they climbed. I was able to just grab the rope and zip right up to the top just using my arms. Those were the days! Youth, it's a shame to waste it on the young. :( |
I can do 5-6 at age 47 but this wouldn't be the only indicator for me. My left shoulder isn't in the right place, so that doesn't let me engage my lat as it should(I keep saying I'm going to get this looked at). I also weigh #220 right now at 5'10". Working towards #200, this will get me into 32" waist pants with no muffin top.
Right now I can curl 50# dumbells. At age 45, I could squat, deadlift and bench #300(I'm probably close now, I took a little time off). I didn't start lifting until I was 40. dean |

Unreal! . I used to curl 45# each arm in my 'fightin' days'. The other day I bought my g/f a 45# box of Duralogs. I couldn't believe how I struggled w/that box. |
I did 50 in 8th grade, for the school record.
I don;t have anywhere to do any, but I could probably do a few. I'm 54. |
Keep it coming.
I'm 5 @ 50. |
Someone call 911.........

I think the ability to do pull ups has more to do with fitness than age. Granted, I suspect that level of fitness often decreases as we begin to get older.
I'm in my early/mid 40s and could probably manage a few. I suspect that if I worked at it, I could be up to 20 in a couple of months. In HS, I could climb a rope without using my legs. |

I could prob muster about 10 today at 37 even though I weigh 240 lbs. About 5 years ago I did 17 in our company gym on a challenge from a co worker. I naturally strong I benched almost 400lbs in highschool and deadlifted 600 lbs. I hardly work out right now and am a fatty and still think I could bench 300 if I had to. Can barely run a mile unfortunately
|
When I was 13 years old I could regularly do between 100-120 pulls ups. A few others could do 80 or so, one other guy could do 100 but not repeat in the same week.
Last year after a multi-year break from exercise I decided to do a warm up of 20 or so push ups. I could have done 50 or so, but I'm glad I stopped. A couple of days later I noticed I pulled something, I think I'm finally over it but I'm being very careful. I still cannot throw a ball very far. |
If it wasn't the extra 20-30 lbs of dead weight we had to pull compared to then we were 18, I am sure we can do a few more.
|
I never have been able to do them. I swam, ran, cycled etc.
During my school years the only thing that kept me from getting the Presidential Fitness Award was pull ups. |
In my younger years I could always do 20 plus underhand. Those days are over. After reading this I went out to the garage and pumped out a whopping 7. I'm 58.
|
100 pull ups
100 push ups 100 squats 100 sit ups 25 min & 23 seconds Dead lift, squat & overhead press total=805 Been training much more consistent for about the last 9 months. 46 years old |
Show-off!!! :D
|
Hmmmmmm... I don't know. Now I am curious. I will go find a place to do some pull ups and report back. I don't remember doing them as a kid. Maybe for fitness testing? But I don't remember how many I could do. I lift weights now and work out my arms a lot in dance class.
I am female and 39... |
