Got an OK deal on a 'tender w octagon barrel in 44 mag and ported. Thought id get more barrels but thats not looking likely now. And a new local WMA is no long guns...

Local pawn has the SBH and I could do a trade pretty much straight up

Will always keep my Ruger 44 carbine so I do want to keep a 44 handgun

I think the Ruger is the one. Having a single action revolver and carbine in the same caliber is inherently cool.

What are you going to use it for? What are the respective barrel lengths?

Personally, any barrel porting rules out any gun of any kind for me. Can't shoot cast bullets in them. But, since you already have it, that was clearly not a consideration.

Even before you answer my questions, I would recommend the Ruger for just about every conceivable use a .44 mag could be put to. The Contender is just not a good platform for a revolver round. Now if it was something like .30 or .357 Herrett, that might be another story. Revolvers are best for revolver rounds... much more versatile.

I have a 4" Ruger Redhawk in stainless steel that I like. It is a large piece, but the weight helps tame the 44 mag recoil. Shooting 44 specials results in almost no recoil, the regular 44 mag loads are a little heavier in the recoil department and the heaviest loads will put it just about over my head. Very strong design. I don't think you could blow it up with any reasonable load.

Im assuming the SBH means Super Black Hawk. I've had a SBH for 30 years. Best and most accurate Pistol I have ever shot.

Ah, yes - I love my Super Blackhawk as well. Here are my current pair of .44 mag single actions. One for hunting, one for general woods bumming. First one is a 6" stainless Virginian Dragoon (along with its "little" brother, a 7 1/2" blued in .357), next one is a 3 1/2" Super Blackhawk along with their two favorite loads - the old Keith load consisting of the RCBS .45-250K cast from wheel weights over 20.0 grains of Alliant 2400 (equivalent to 22.0 grains of the old Hercules 2400), and a 300 grain LBT over 23 grains of 296. Wonderful, versatile caliber, used in two markedly different platforms.
