$10 grand? I bought my identical '81 S for $10,500 new in '81.

Oh, to have a bigger garage.... Nice example.

I hate the wheels and it's a strange car having 23k miles and being completely restored(?) And the golf ball shifter is missing?

I'll be curious to see where it goes but I like mine better. :)

This thread was a fun read for me, just now. I had 3 Rabbits. '75, '79 and '84. The '75 was my favorite because of weight. Bought the '84 new and sold it with nearly 300K miles. It still had the original clutch. Not joking.

Your car is gorgeous, Denis. Love the color. It has to be one of the finest surviving examples of a very desirable car.

Perhaps my recollection is incorrect, but I thought the rear suspensions on these were one great big trailing arm(s). They did not need rear sways, because that big trailing arm fork was one piece. Perhaps I am mistaken.

The later ones with 16 valves had substantially more power, but also more weight and less soul. As I say the '75 was the funnest to drive. I wonder what it weighed.

I love those wheels. Very correct for that car. In 1987, my girlfriend had those exact wheels on her Scirocco while we were stationed in Germany.
I think the car needs to be lowered a bit though

I don't think anyone will disagree with you on this.

In the early 80s I had an ‘81 S in that same color.
It was a fun car.
The most distinctive thing was the engine sound they made when accelerating. It’s hard to describe, it wasn’t an exhaust noise, but a metallic sounding noise from the engine compartment.
I had it for a few years. Oddly, it’s one of the few cars I have no recollection of actually buying or selling, haha. Don’t remember where it came from or where it went.
Anyways, I haven’t seen one in years, but in pictures they’ve aged well. It’s one of those cars that didn’t really improve (at least to my eyes) in subsequent generations.

Yes, details please!
It looks amazingly like my old ‘79 Copper Brown Metallic Scirocco…

Nice! Congrats Shaun.

You are correct. The rear axle consists of a beam with a trailing arm on each end. The stub axles bolt to the ends of the arms with non-parallel surface spacers to effect toe and camber. Stock Rabbits had no rear anti roll bar, but GTis did. I added a rear bar to my '83 to reduce understeer.

Best

I wish I had some give. :) This was the ad:
Old School VW
Mechanic Special
Don’t know if it runs
New paint
All original parts for it

Owner since 1998 passed away, a dealer had it. Antenna were up but they proved to be straight shooters, just had no idea what they had. A bit of a gamble but bought it sight unseen and will get into it next weekend. It sat for a very long time, minimum 5 years I would say given the gas smell as turpentine.

On inspection, it's just a solid little car with the interior filled with junk. Will look at tire date codes today.

The color is great!

steve911 02-05-2023 10:56 AM

Good luck with it!
What year?
Is that a sunroof/moonroof? I had an after-market one installed in mine - helped with ventilation since there was no A/C in that little screamer.

Shaun @ Tru6 02-05-2023 12:57 PM

Thanks Steve! It's an '81 and has a factory sunroof. Looking forward to digging into it next weekend.

WPOZZZ 02-05-2023 02:10 PM

Trade you some fried apple pies for it!

Shaun @ Tru6 02-05-2023 02:20 PM

LOL! I've got to tell you, that is almost a fair trade. Believe it or not I think about them now and again.

Hey Denis- can I borrow $10k for a month?

Zeke 10-01-2023 05:47 PM

Nice flip. Well, owned 2 years so maybe not a 'flip'.
