Loved my 87 16v I bought in late 88. Great car. It replaced my 83 8V.

Cheers

I had an 84 MK!! that I bought with 50k on it and lowered it to 4"with a set of Koni Sport Shocks and Springs. I sold it after about 10 years with over 250k on the odometer and bought a Corrado. The Corrado G60 wasn't as much funs since it had power steering in it and was a money pit.

Great car -----period

Shaun @ Tru6 02-02-2024 11:11 AM

It's surprising to me that the MK2 is only 150 lb heavier than the 1. A friend had a new one in college and there is a lot more car to it than the MK1. Definitely felt more substantial than the 78 I had after college, like a real car vs. a little runabout toy.

Just scored this model on FBMP, mom is cleaning out her son's old (very old) room.

See all pictures for its condition. Been stored on shelf 30 years collecting dust.

When I had my lowered 84, I found a good way to rid myself of tailgaters by downshifting the close ratio transmission from 5th to 3rd followed by tapping my brake light while getting on the gas. The car would slow dramatically before they saw the brake light and by then you would be pulling away. They would follow at a distance after that. I also had a problem in traffic with pickup drivers in traffic following so close they couldn't see my brake light until I installed one on the top of the hatch.

The model is cool, I'm jealous. I used to build a lot of models when I was a child, probably explains the brain damage.

Dang. Don't think I've seen a Scirocco model kit before. I did a few as a kid, but that was pre-YouTube, so they never turned out the way I envisioned. Then I met a girl...

Great read from 1983 Car & Driver on the Callaway Turbo Scirroco. 1983-callaway-volkswagen-turbo-scirocco

$16,500 is a hefty price tag! I paid $10,000 for my stock Scirroco in 1983.

That's a fantastic build...just outstanding. Those little pickups won't really carry much but they're light as a feather and this would be really quick. The other thing is that they were all delivered in the USA as diesels, if not mistaken, so that the title probably says "D" under fuel type and it would therefore never need smog check in CA. :)

The Scirocco is named after a warm wind. It would be an appropriate nickname for some I know.

Actually, they came as both Gas and diesel, I've owned many over the years and did almost the exact same build back in the 80s. But a Gen 1 GTI engine and transmission and a converted from diesel to gas. Also, they were designed and built in the USA.

And it was quick too.
While these were extremely slow in the stock, tired form, (at this point, the diesels had 400,000 miles on em and still around 40MPG,) and yes, a very limited payload. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1713566890.jpg

But the one you is the Turbo Diesel 82 Sports Truck, a friend had one in school, fully optioned out, and is was surprisingly quick. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1713567603.jpg
David's was very similar to the one in the ad, but blue and silver, and alloy wheels.

Funny story, I moved to Clay County in the 90s, and they didn't have emissions testing, but Duvall, where Jacksonville is, did. So I'm driving my little silver diesel rabbit truck to my girlfriend's house in Jax, and like old diesels do, it belched smoke when I shifted, and one of JSOs fineness, pulls me over to make sure I was legal (remember, this one used a Sun Dial to measure zero to sixty) well, he noticed that it smoked, and asked for my emissions paperwork, I told him that I live in Clay County, where he goes to tell me that they have emissions in Duvall, and at that point, I informed him that it was a diesel.

Really is. The paint is so good that the tailgate has trees reflected and it looks warped. It's straight as can be. What, it has a scratch up in the wheel well? Poor baby.

This car has popped up a few times on FBMP/Scirocco group for $10K. A week or so ago I told the seller he should just put it on BaT, he'll probably get more $ and I suspect many others have as well.

Modified 1981 Volkswagen Scirocco 5-Speed

He couldn't find a buyer at $10K? That's very surprising.

Shaun @ Tru6 06-13-2024 01:14 PM

Suspicion only, I think each time he posted was a fishing expedition. He also seemed a little off kilter in his responses about the ads.

speeder 06-13-2024 01:33 PM

I wonder what kind of reserve they gave him…definitely low. The reserve on mine was super low, (all they would give me), I just listed it on faith and it worked out.

Shaun @ Tru6 06-13-2024 01:49 PM

It's at $6K now so whatever it is doesn't matter anymore.
