crappy hotel rooms
I'm not real picky, but travel booked me at the Eaton-Chelsea in Toronto, the regular places like the Intercontinental were sold out at least for a few of the 8 nights I'll be here. This place is old and tired, and smells a little funky And $210 per night. I did check for bed bugs and didn't see any so I've that going for me. Its friggin cold here.

I spend a lot of time in crappy hotel rooms. I travel a lot as well but my rooms come out of my per diem money. So I like to find rooms a little on the cheap side. I do have my limits though. One time in Beaver, UT, I had to ask the owners kid for a vacuum so I can clean up the cigerette butts off the floor. Never again will I be that cheap.

I'm a business traveler - I just want a clean room, nice shower, reasonable. I'm not looking for amenities. When I'm traveling, I 'm working 12 hrs/day and when I get back to my room, I need water, hot shower, wifi and a good bed. I have been all over this world, TV can be boring, I just need what I described. I bring books, movies, mp3 player, etc.
Have I been in crapy places, yes I have. I don't get caught up in it because I will move to a different hotel. I was at a hotel in Sumpter, SC and the water was red. I felt dirtier after the shower! I move the next day to a hotel in Columbia, SC and had a warm, clean shower and conducted by business. It is about adjustments.

I am a business traveler as well and spend 2 overnights every week, sometimes at two different hotels.
The worst hotel experience I have ever had was when I had to spend the night in a motel at a very small town on the foothills of the Sierras just this side of Northern CA. The room smelled like armpits, The receptionist was cute but she was missing some teeth. The sheets were rumpled before I had a chance to sit on the bed. I slept with my clothes on, no skin exposed. I wore socks and a t-shirt over my hair. |

That's the old Delta Chelsea. It has always been one of the cheaper options in Toronto. Welcome to the Great White, Hugh. Sorry I can't see you this weekend. Yes, it is friggin cold here.

I used to be a regional manager for a company that sold mobile communications systems to the trucking industry. I spent a lot of time visiting truck stop managers and service managers that sold our systems. Made the mistake of mentioning to the manager of a Truckstops of America manager that I was tired and had a fair distance to cover to get to my hotel. Well, he insisted that I stay in their motel at no charge. Motel 6 would have been a step up. It was like sleeping in an ashtray. My boss gave me a big pat on the back for appeasing our business partner, but told me next time, to just just say "No thanks."

Hugh, what's that note on the sliding glass door about? That's kind of unusual for a hotel to be obscuring the view like that.

Those here that were in the Navy or Army can relate to some hotels in some of the more adventurous cities we get to visit?! Sorry, no pictures since this is a family (?) board! Some nice places are the Palace of Love in Wanchai district in old Hong Kong, the Marmont hotel in Subic Bay, Blue Dolphin Motel in Pattaya Beach Thailand......etc, etc

I know the feeling Hugh, but I've stayed in worse too...
The Mizpah Hotel in Tonopah NV. Not only is pretty worse for wear with fixtures that appear to date to the '50s its also one of the most haunted places in NV. Try getting to sleep there. ![]() |

The worst I've had was an Embassy Suites with ants in the bed. No other rooms available, housekeeping staff gone home, but they were willing to give us some sheets to change them ourselves.

I spent 17 years traveling every week or two. I've seen it all, from hotel suites that were fit for a sheik to dumps that a meth addict wouldn't stay in.
The photo you posted, ah, price is a bit steep, but nothing out of the ordinary. (What's that show you have on the TV? Looks like crap. Maybe that's why the negative assessment of the room) |

I hope only the fact that this is >$200 a night on a biz trip has you post. I am picky too if it is $$$ and for work.
That said, In my private life, I am a faithful Motel6 customer when I am not tent camping or sleeping in the back of the SUV. ![]() I just can't get myself to spend $100 or more of my hard earned just to fall asleep in a room. Who cares how it looks, smells or feels. I am unconscious in it for 95% of the time. ![]() G |

Have stayed there a few times, its just a place to crash for a night. The bar down stairs fill up pretty good on weekends with cougars. Seriously, my wife and I would grab a couch and watch the hunt. Its hilarious. Hotel seems real busy all the time as well. Intercontinental down on front st is by far a better choice. At least where you are you are close to The Zanzibar. Good Irish food and atmosphere a few blocks south at The Irish Embassy
