how long do you commute?

looking for another home and the houses in my small city have gotten very expensive (think oil boom). A 20 minute commute out of town will buy us a LOT more home for my money. This town has very limited services and a population of less than 700....we are talking small town here. I like the idea of getting out of the city....I like the homes available and the lot sizes are incredible. My travel time to work stays the same (office is 20mins away from this town and 20mins away from my current house in town.) This will add 20mins to the G/F's commute but she seems ok with it (for now).
Any of you guys living a similar lifestyle? How far would you be willing to commute for the right house/yard?
Thanks

I live in a tiny town and my morning commute is about 25 mins. The trip home is 45. I could never live in a city

Being in rural NS and 6 minutes away from my place of work in the summertime, my only complaint is somedays I feel like taking another road so I can enjoy the top-down driving.SmileWavy

I confess: I am a mean old semi-retired guy with no consideration for working stiffs in larger population centres.

60 seconds, but I managed to cut it down to 30 seconds.

My last job was a big renovation on the house next door. I used to walk out the front gate and into the next place, but I found a short cut over the garage roof.

Usually... If I actually had a job I mean, it would take me 45 minutes. GF works in town and she can do it in 20 minutes.

mreid 03-02-2014 01:36 PM

15 minutes. Shortest commute I've ever had.

faverymi 03-02-2014 01:52 PM

I do the reverse commute

25 minutes in the morning or evening.

Changes on Fridays during the summer PMs

yetibone 03-02-2014 01:52 PM

7 miles, 3 stop signs, and one light. I turn 7 times, and on the way home, I only have one stop sign, but I have to turn left across a divided highway at that one light.

It takes me 10 minutes either way. I drive against the flow of Research Triangle Park traffic both times, so I can usually do + the speed limit. Sometimes I get behind a landscaping truck, dump truck, or slow drivin' country folks headed to Dallas Chicken 'n' Biscuits in Apex for breakfast and solvin' world issues, which might add a minute or ten. Other than that, it's a glide.

I have long commute, but I ride the train, so I can sleep. It's too long of a commute many days. BUT near home, I have nearly everything I need. I sometimes have to drive a little ways to some stores be don't have out here. I'm not sure I could live in a place where everything of value during off hours was a long drive, which sounds like what you describe.

masraum 03-02-2014 01:59 PM

I live in the 4th largest city in the country (in the suburbs really), my commute is about 22-23 miles, and my usual commute is 25-30 mins. I'm lucky in that I commute at off times. In the more peak hours, my commute would probably be 35-45 mins.

I consider myself pretty lucky.

I had another commute a few years back that was about 35-37 miles. I that was usually a 45-60 minute commute. It was much, much worse than my current commute.

I've known and worked with folks that commute 50-75 miles and drive for around an hour each way. They pay the price to live way, out of town. I wouldn't want to do that.

gprsh924 03-02-2014 02:09 PM

13 miles

30 mins in the morning, 45-60 on the way home. I get to work early. If I got in the office at a normal time, it would be 45-60 mins on the way in as well.

flatbutt 03-02-2014 02:09 PM

Its jersey....20 miles in just 1 hour!

That is going to become a problem. She will either find a new job, or you'll be finding yourself a new GF.

cruisin 03-02-2014 02:30 PM

33 miles, all but about 2 miles is open hiway with very little traffic on hills & curves for 20 of the 33 miles. I usually make it in 35 minutes in the morning darkness; less on the trip home in the afternoon. Also generally get to do it on two wheels about 150 days a year. :D

bell 03-02-2014 02:59 PM

Just moved to my new pad today. ..
Old commute... City driving 8 miles, 32 minutes with school buses, traffic. ..
New commute. ...all but the last mile is Highway 34 miles, 45 minutes.....

john70t 03-02-2014 03:17 PM

mikesride, just a thought:
Instead of purchasing while in the RE upswing, what about renting?
Have your company rent the space if zoned dual-purpose, and you sublease.

Oil towns can be boom-n-bust.
Major investments involved here.
Major stress.
The whole area could lose major property value 5-10 years from now, just when you want a change in lifestyle...

1990C4S 03-02-2014 03:43 PM

I do 45 minutes each way every day. 140 km per day, I do 1,000 km per week if I work seven days. All for family reasons. That's why I have to drive a small boring diesel.

Paul T 03-02-2014 04:01 PM

I'm about an hour each way..half car and half train. It's doable but I couldn't handle any longer.

cboosh 03-02-2014 04:06 PM

I average about 1000 miles per week.
My territory is central & northern Maine.

NY65912 03-02-2014 04:08 PM

I live 10 miles from my shop. It takes between 25-30 mins in the morning via the streets, I leave at 5:40 am. it takes 55 min to 1:10 in the evening via the streets. If I try to take the highway it's 1 hr -1 1/2 hr, it's 20 miles by highway, around the horn so to speak.

onlycafe 03-02-2014 04:11 PM

through three doors to the stairs, down the stairs... i'm at the cafe ready for work. takes a bit longer to get back home, it is up the stairs, with gravity against me.

Erakad 03-02-2014 04:16 PM

5 minutes door-to-door...approx 1/4 mile, can't beat it.

Sarc 03-02-2014 04:57 PM

For the past 2 years, it has been 1.25 hours one way (35 miles) on average.
This winter, there have been several occasions where the number has been 2-2.5 hours one way.
So in addition to the 50-65 hours I put in, I spend an extra 15-20 hours per week sitting in my car. It's both dreadful and unsustainable; I've become consumed with finding a solution sooner than later.

steveo12345 03-02-2014 05:36 PM

Four minutes door to door for the last few years. Did close to an hour one way for years and regret every minute wasted. i will never do a long commute again.

Henry Schmidt 03-02-2014 05:41 PM

50 yards for the last 9 years.

This is something we have talked about.....but we don't see the resource sector here slowing down any time soon...and rent feels like such a waste of money. We are both excited about the prospect of small town life but worry if we will end up being bored or isolated from our friends....

To put things in perspective....in the city my money will buy a 960sq foot house built in the 50's... your choice it can have either a garage OR a developed basement...never both. Maximum two bathrooms and three bedrooms.

Out of town the home we are focused on right now is on two lots, was built on ICF foundations in 2009, two car attached garage, 1700sq feet on the main floor totally developed basement with a steel beam running across the rafters (no supporting walls or teleposts) 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, two dens, fireplace and a nice open concept. And the master bedroom is a great size with an additional full bathroom and its own private deck overlooking the nicest sunset this side of the rockies.........

Hence my dilemma.....

Plus....15 minutes away from 4 different lakes!!!!!

onewhippedpuppy 03-02-2014 06:24 PM

7 minutes. The heater is usually warm about 5 minutes in.

I live in town, but would happily triple my commute for some land. Hopefully I can swing that in a few years.

jcommin 03-02-2014 06:33 PM

I live 9.5 miles away from work. On a good day - 20 minutes, 1 1/2 hours on a not so good day. On those days, I swear I could walk faster home. The commute home is always longer and the worst on Fridays.

id10t 03-02-2014 06:38 PM

50 minutes if I have to take kids to school, 25 if not, both ways include a stop at McDs for coffee. Direct route door to door is 17 miles, has 4 stop lights and is mostly lightly traveled interstate or us highway

GH85Carrera 03-02-2014 07:12 PM

8 miles for me. Usually about 12 minutes or less. Some days I drive the first 2 miles and I don't see another moving car.

Tobra 03-02-2014 07:18 PM

Maybe 5 miles, all surface streets, usually less than 10 minutes

I am pretty commute averse

John Rogers 03-02-2014 07:24 PM

Zero, I am retired!

on2wheels52 03-02-2014 07:48 PM

Four miles; 3 stop signs, 3 traffic lights (if I take the closet way). I ride every day, if I'm lucky I never have to put a foot down.

You must live on the good side of htown. When I lived out on 290 it was 45 mins to an hour to cover the 10 miles into our office. Sometimes longer. I hated it! Now, I'm home officed, so some days I do the first few emails laying in bed with my phone. :D

jyl 03-02-2014 09:33 PM

About 10-15 minutes, by bicycle.

Ayles 03-02-2014 09:39 PM

4 miles, all city but it can still take 30 min on a bad day. Wouldn't trade it for anything. Well, maybe a bigger garage some day.

trekkor 03-02-2014 11:00 PM

For the last 23 years It's been 5-30 minutes depending on the job location.

Usually 15-20 with the rare out of town project.

My work truck, that I bought new in '01, has only 165k miles on it.

Grog 03-02-2014 11:20 PM

I live 2 miles from work. Takes me 40 to 45 minutes to drive there.

Sounds like the beginning to a physics problem. w=mg

jyl 03-03-2014 02:36 AM

Is the traffic that bad? Why don't you walk and get there in the same time, or ride a bike and get there in less time?
