Places to stay in Cork, Ireland?

The wife and I are planning our first trip to Ireland in May and we are planning on hitting three cities: Dublin, Howth and Cork. We've got Dublin and Howth covered, but we're having trouble picking out a place to stay in Cork. We prefer B&B's or small hotels off the beaten path and we just can't seem to find a place that looks appealing. I know Cork is a fairly tourist-riddled area, but there has to be someplace that isn't totally cheesy and has more "local flavor" than "tourist trap".

Does anybody have any advice or suggestions?

TIA for your input, it is greatly appreciated.

I'll be happy to oblige.... Just gotta find a place to hang my hat first!

Other than the, "Once was a man from Nantucket..." rhymes we all learned at camp, I don't know much about Limerick. Have you been -- is it a better choice than Cork?

No, haven't been but sounds like a great place. Better practice your beer drinking before you go there too.

National Geo Traveler has an article on Ireland in the current issue and I believe it mentions a couple Inns in Cork.

I don't remember if this is in Cork or not, but look up Aherns in a town named Youghal. Nice family run B&B.

You almost can't go wrong anywhere in Cork.

Remember, they say Cark.

I can't say about lodging but I was in Cork last year just for the day. It seems to be a very lively town and if you stay too far out you might miss it. Some places we choose to stay out in the country, and some we like to be within walking distance at all times. The heart of Cork seemed like a walker to me. JM2C

Find a good B&B. It a great way to meet the people as well. Ireland is my favorite to travel. Stay in B&B everywhere.

Just wanted to say Thanks to those that chimed in. We bagged a nice little B&B right in the heart of Cork. You guys are great!

Now....time to start getting my alcohol tolerance up.

pubs close early. But usually they let you stay after hours to finish up the 8 pints you ordered at closing time. Watch out for the Dublin boys....they cheat at darts.

We're on MacCurtain St. near the Everyman Theatre. My wife made the final arrangements, but apparently it's a property run by the Isaacs Hotel, which itself gets high marks and has a highly rated restaurant, Greenes, located there.

targa911S, I know that you're a musician and I was wondering if you've ever had the chance to sit in with any of the locals, and if so, what is the "jamming etiquette"? Here in the states if you know a basic I-IV-V progression you can pretty much cheat your way through anything, but I'm pretty clueless when it comes to traditional Irish folk tunes.

The Irish love their music and we attended several performances and jam sessions but never sat in. American bluegrass has it's origins in Irish folk music to give you an idea. Learn a few traditional songs and bring some familiar Yank tunes to share. Buying a round for the other players always creates fast friendships.
