Maybe it has gone off. Just that it's so far underwater that it can't be "heard".

I discount the current crash scene in the South. The plane would have flown past the base at Diego Garcia. I'm pretty sure they might have noticed a huge plane with no transponders signalling in the middle of the night if the plane was flown South.

On one hand, if the wreckage is found it will prove the paranoia of the uber right wing. On the other hand, I can't see an aircraft with a significant enough fire to overcome the pilots and crew not burning up and crashing long before it's fuel runs out 7 hours later. That scenario then proves a healthy dose of paranoia is sometimes warranted.

I do find it interesting that the one thing a pilot would not be aware of, an engine maintenance transponder, is the only system not disengaged and may in the end be the only thing that provides true insight into the fate of the aircraft.

I don't know... I just think it is important that someone figures out what happened.

Diego Garcia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Quote:

Diego Garcia is a tropical, footprint-shaped coral atoll located south of the equator in the central Indian Ocean.
The wreckage may be closer to the Antarctic than the equator given the satellite radar arc/path and currents.

Differing opinions on the possible wreckage sinking.

Some say if it existed it could have sunk by now, others say if it's been floating this long it will just keep floating.

Latest news this morning - The Captain made an outgoing phone call (cell) just before take-off...................'they' are now determining who the person on the other end is/was

That is a godforsaken part of the ocean.

Does the B777 have this 180 mode feature?

It sure would explain a lot if it does.

Dynon Preflight Brief: Did You Know? Dynon Autopilot 180º Mode
Quote:

Did You Know? Dynon Autopilot 180º Mode
The 180º mode in Dynon’s integrated autopilot system is a quick and simple way to have the autopilot reverse the aircraft’s current course if you get into trouble.

A good example of a situation in which a pilot might want to use 180º mode is during inadvertent flight into IMC. Another example might be when some type of inflight emergency prompts the pilot to return to a known airport behind the aircraft’s current position.

In the SkyView system, the 180º mode is available only when using the Simplified control scheme. It is engaged using Button 6, labeled 180º, in the AUTOPILOT menu.

One discussion to come from this incident is to have a much longer record time for the voice recorder.

Thank you for the info.

If it did go into the water, I think if it broke apart you will see cushions and such floating for some time. If it went in intact, sonar will be the only way of finding it... Maybe they'll discover Atlantis in the process.

Was jumping back and forth between Fox News and CNN last night and Fox News had a guest on that stated that he believed that the plane had been hijacked and flown to Pakistan. Also, some interesting bits of information were told that the plane has automatic beacons that should go off if it suffers more than a 1G impact or if it comes in contact with water. Neither of which have gone off....
That guy on fox was wrapped pretty tight wasn't he?

There's so much misinformation and lying in this situation....its insane.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one that thought the retired AF general was out there....

widgeon13 03-21-2014 07:34 AM

That guy was supposedly a retired general, not sure in whose Army. (I'm embarrassed for the AF) I don't recall seeing him before. Also not sure how being a retired general makes him an expert in this situation. Interesting that no other news media followed that lead.

He's probably getting a nice check for his air time. If he was going along with everyone else he wouldn't be in front of the camera now would he???

With the condition of the USAF, their's no reason to be embarrassed. ;)

To me, it always seemed illogical for the plane to head south if it was a hijack or takeover of some kind. The northern route would make the most sense for anyone who purposely took the plane for reasons other than suicide. However, I cannot imagine any flight over that territory that lasted four or more hours to be done without detection, especially to Pakistan. Crossing China? Crossing Indian air space? Crossing any country in that area without detection seems very very remote. Paranoia there runs high.

I still can't buy the ocean crash but I am becoming more convinced of the behind the scenes data gathered by the U.S. and others that pushes the search in that location. It's hard to believe the Australian Prime Minister would announce to his Parliament the discovery of possible wreckage unless there was some pretty sound, undisclosed analysis. Even with his warning that it may not be part of 370, he did not need to announce anything until it had been confirmed, yet he chose to do so. It wouldn't surprise me to find out the U.S. and Australian security departments approached him to make an announcement so the information could be made public in a way that doesn't overtly reveal the capabilities their data gathering. Further, China has nine warships in the area. That's something they wouldn't do lightly.

Still, if the plane crashed, why didn't the ELT go off? Those signals are monitored by satellite 24/7 yet, nothing. Even the experts are puzzled. And, if the wreckage isn't from the plane, that pushes everything back toward square one with every conspiracy back on the table. What a tragedy for the families.

+1 and thanks for your insight and prior post. If nothing is discovered or conclusive, where does the industry stand? I mean if its this bizzare, IT COULD HAPPEN AGAIN.

Never discovering ANYTHING is worst case. Never knowing how, never knowing why. Imagine if nobody had claimed responsibility for 9/11? The only thing worse than knowing your enemy, is knowing that you have an enemy that you don't know.

gordner 03-21-2014 08:38 AM

Keep in mind they had a much smaller search area for the air france crash, that took two years to locate and they never picked up the signal from the ELT's or CVR or FDR though they all broadcast as they are supposed to.
Every signal has a range, if you are too far you won't read it. Add in that it could be considerably deep in the ocean and the signal may not be readable at all.

actually the real danger in never knowing, is never knowing how the aircraft failed. it basically insures something like this will happen again. without knowing how the fire/failure started, its almost impossible to stop from happening again.

IIRC no one did take credit for 9/11 officially.
