I am really liking this Triumph 675, collected a few chunks of wood so far this season.

Started kart racing in '66, retired in '78 when I got married.Resumed in '96 for 1 season but then took up hillclimbs as I didnt like the dodgem car attitude that seems to pervade UK circuit racing nowadays. My hillclimb cars have been Mini-Marcos, Porsche 924S, Sylva Leader, Vindicator Vulcan.

I raced vintage bikes for awhile. Was fun while it lasted. This photo was shot at the Donner Pass Hillclimb, which was something like 6 miles in length with more than 60 corners. My bike, a 350cc Ducati that ran in both 350 Sportsman and 500 Sportsman, was first in class in the 350 classification that year, the first year this event was run.

It was a GTU (2.8) class at the Daytona 24 hour. Another PCAer and I were snared to drive with the owner’s wife. We showed up on Tuesday as requested and stood around waiting for more than a day. When the car showed, it was still in pieces and the engine not yet completely assembled. When they got the engine together it would only turn over with the jack handle between two bolts on the flywheel. Believe it or not it finally ran on the track, abet very slowly. The owner paid my way back to Denver and my guys pulled the MFI 2.8S out of my 914-6, converted it to 911 configuration and had it on a pallet for me. We took it out to Stapleton and I flew back to Daytona with the engine as “excess baggage.”
As I recall, we ran as high as 7th with my street engine (it is still in the 914-6). The owner’s wife was pi$$ed that she wasn’t going to be in the car at the finish and smoked the tires going out of the pits at about hour 20. We spent the next four hours replacing CV joints in sequence and finished 20th something.

My apologies if I’m relating events not about the 911 in the illustration.

The next race weekend was Sebring and I drove Bob Garretson’s 935K3 with much more success. Jerry Woods was crew chief and the professionalism showed. I think we finished seventh OA.

Garretson’s was the team that went to LeMans with Paul Newman. They won the Daytona 24 the year before (Garretson, Rahal, Redman.) I was volunteer crew for that race. They were anointed “The Best Private Porsche Team in the World.” Thanks guys for letting me be part.

Best,
Grady

Still do this along with occasional cone dodgingin a parking lot. But Rotax Sprint racing is WAY more fun. and a heck of a lot more difficult.

I'm really enjoying the direction this thread is going, exactly what I was hoping for, thanks for the great posts and keep them coming please.

VINMAN, watching offshore and inshore powerboats when I was little left a huge impression on me. Little did I know back then how big an impression and what it would lead to. Is it right BOAT is short for Bring Out Another Thousand

Sandman thanks for the Grady post, we were lucky to have him here and I know his contributions will be missed.

I don't see any human powered racing yet, BMX, time trials etc I know there are a few on here, where are you?

Oh! Does Mountain Biking count? How about 5th in the NORBA California Series Cross Country, over 50 class.

I came in dead last racing road bikes on the Laguna Seca track in the Sea Otter Classic, Cat4....My only road bike race. Those dudes are fast!

Cool My brief racing career (1989-1992)

Sorry for the photo of a photo. This was taken at the June Sprints in 92 at turn 6. We were the CENDIV Regional Champ in SSB for 1990 and 1991. It was low buck racing with a rusty Ford Conversion van and open trailer. It really made me appreciate how hard and expensive it must be on the Pro level to compete.

I think it was Vash that said: "Even amateur racing is like mounting a small military campaign"
