free to a good home - '96 Olds

HI fellow Pelicaneers -

My step dad has just passed and one of the things left behind is a mostly great 1996 olds aurora, 112k, taupe metallic, loaded. The thing runs and drive super - but occasionally for no good reason you cannot get it to engage into a gear. Been looked at by the dealer - can't figure it out. Probably something stupid simple - but we're not going to deal with it.

The major issue is that this is causing stress for my mom - and we just need the thing gone. Located in Indio, CA. Smogged and tagged.

Ideal solution would be to have it go to someone that it would benefit - and if there were a tax-deductible something along the way for my mom, so much the better.

Anyone have any thoughts as to the easiest way to get this thing gone?

I'll be in Indio on FRI (which would be the best day) to help manage this.....

thanks for your help -

tom

Sorry for your loss, Tom. I'm in Los Angeles and don't need another car but I do know of someone who might qualify if it's reasonably dependable. Feel free to contact me via PM and I'd be glad to help with the logistics.

Take care and sorry again about your dad.

In theory this is a good idea but I've always suspected that some of these "cars for charity" lots are scammy in the non-profit category. This does not apply if it's with a legit org like Jewish or Catholic Charities, etc...

Sorry for your loss.
You might consider donating it to Goodwill. They take cars and I believe you can get a fair market value deduction on taxes. The other option might be to donate it to cars for veterans but I'm not sure about the deduction with CFV though.

Call Kars for Kids, they'll come out and tow it away and do all the paperwork for you and you'll get a tax deduction equivilent to whatever it sells for at auction (min $500).

Thanks Crustychief - I like the idea of helping out our much neglected vets, anyone know if these are legitimate 'helping' organizations and if the money actually reaches those who need it, vs just the administration and executive salaries of the 'charity'?

I've read some alarming stuff about the 'wounded warriors' where most of the money seems to support the organization - and only a small amount trickles thru to those who need it most.

Will do some research on this group as well -

thanks again for all your good wishes, this group on Pelican is truly the very best!

cheers

Fisher house looks to be a good one. Here is some more information.

Ugh - turns my stomach. A cautionary note from the BBB on this outfit - when I called they said "about 70%" of the proceeds benefits the charity - but that is suspiciously close to the "net" after the 30% that goes to the prez of this scam!

Scam might be too harsh a word, or not, and while I can appreciate that an org'n has to cover overheads, and that there is a cost to doing this sort of business.....etc. This one smells a bit fishy after a bit of research. Pity, they say all the right things....

You're much better off quickly selling the car on Craigslist and donating the money directly to the charity of your choice
