Supras

I sometimes search Craigslist for Toyota Supras since I'm kinda interested in getting one after seeing how a modified Supra Turbo was just barely able to catch up with my 545 hp 930, and I've been noticing something about the Mk. IV (1993-2002 model) Supra lately. It seems as if the stock Mk. IV's, even the twin turbo model, go for less than ones that are modified. This particular model of Supras, just like our old 911's, are rising in value, but also, in any car, modification lowers the value, so the modifications never pay for themselves once the car is sold. Despite this, I often see modified Supra Turbos (the really nice ones with 600-1000 hp) with 50,000-80,000 miles go for over twice as much as ones that are stock with around the same mileage, sometimes even as little as 20,000 miles, which is very low for a 1990's Toyota :p Comparing this to a 930, modded ones with varying mileage can go for $40,000-$60,000 (I bought mine within this price range), while stock 930's with low mileage can go for up to $80,000, sometimes even $100,000. It seems pretty complicated if you ask me.

This just somewhat doesn't make sense to me as to why a modified Supra seemingly gains value compared to one that's stock, or maybe the value of a Mk. IV Supra is much higher than I think. I'm also aware that condition affects the value as well, so the ones I'm referring to are in good to great condition.

Does anyone, possibly someone who owns (or owned) a modified Mk. IV Supra know why this is?

Thanks,

Don't people primarily buy them to modify? Super stout motors with huge HP potential, isn't that the primary appeal?

You're saying stock Supras are sold for less than what they're possibly valued at so whoever buys them can spend more on mods? Well, that does seem to be the case, however like every car, there are also people who prefer stock, but you can thank The Fast and the Furious for influencing people to build their own "10-second Supra" :p I can't really get a stock Supra to do the mods myself because I don't have the time or money to do so, so I'd prefer to get a Supra pre-modded. I'm in no rush to do so though.

If I can find a nice 6 speed with a single turbo conversion I am in

That's the kind I'm interested in. A while back, there was a Nissan 240SX S14 for sale on Craigslist that had a single turbo 2JZ-GTE that produced over 500 hp and an R154 5-speed, but as soon as the owner lowered the price just enough, it slipped away :( There was also a Lexus SC300 with a single turbo 2JZ-GTE that ran on E85 and also had the R154 5-speed, but this one was much more powerful with 750 rwhp. The seller lived much closer by, but the SC300 got away as well recently.

I've seen the ad for that, but I honestly think it's a fake since the price is way too low for a Supra in that good of condition, there's only one photo of it, and there's no useful info about the car. Sale ads of modded Supras for unusually low prices turn up pretty frequently, but I don't fall for those.

I have a Supra.

To answer your question - only the extremely well built (verifiably), clean and low mileage cars sell for a premium. A lot of guys shoot for the stars, but the cars mostly don't sell for the asks that you're referring to.

Stock, low mileage cars still more often bring the premium. It's similar to the Porsche world. If you're car was build by Alois or Andial, then it'll sell for the premium you're referencing. Supra's are similar. Yes, they're going up in value, but they also get beat on more than Pcars too...so finding clean ones are pretty hard. Production numbers on the MKIV were low. Last year in the states was '98. There are only a few thousand around in the US...as far as MKIV cars are concerned. Toyota priced itself out of the market with that platform.

They are still awesome looking cars. The F&F movie franchise really boosted their values.

I don't want to offend anyone, but I can't believe you guys are serious. Supras are getting on a bit in years and they have been given death most days of their lives. No one bought a Supra to mamby pamby about in them. They were owned by boy racers who trashed them every day and now they are over 10 years old and ready to die. I have just come back from pistol clubs mid year drinks and dinner and had a lot to drink, but I do know what I'm talking about ;)

I think supra is in an odd place

Not that old or much more rare than the other Japanese sports cars

The novelty of mega HP in a Japanese car has sorta worn off. Its always been just as easy and cheaper to get a like performance mustang and there are plenty of fast Japanese cars these days

Rodsrsr 06-28-2014 08:36 AM

I put Surpas, evos and STI's all in the same category. Bill is correct, the target demographic was young hot rod kids, so its hard for me to see a refined, older gentleman (the guys with money basically) wanting to cruise one around. One of the reasons I got into Porsches....I love my hot rods, but didn't want to drive something that a 19 year old would have. :p

slow&rusty 06-28-2014 09:06 AM

To each their own. Drive one and you will think differently. Porsche owners also have a "jerk..I am better than everyone" stereotype which is false. We are talking about the driving experience not the so called stereotypes.

I am not interested in a 240SX or a SC300 with a 2JZGTE swap, I want the real thing

If this car was a 6 speed, I would have bought it:

I was tracking the prices for a while about 5 years ago. Sales on eBay seem to indicate a downward trend in prices since then in anything but the best of the best.

Where I live the import scene seems to be dead. Just don't ever see modified Japanese cars anymore.

A supra was my dream car circa 1995...

The 2004 sti I owned for a few years was probably the most fun daily cars I have ever driven. It could use every one of its 300 HP. Just fast enough to be fun but not fast enough to get you in jail. Cheap and normal enough that I didn't worry about trying to keep it nice

Same here, except I just got to work and I am on my second cup of coffee. I have always liked the look of the Supra and of course the performance is legendary, I would love to own/drive one.

I guess the prices are just a reflection of what the market will support... however if I had $50-60K to spend on a fun car not sure Supra would be high on the list.

And I drive a Miata so I certainly don't care what other people think about my ride.

Which goes back to my original point. I dont see anyone with 50-60k cash (these cars are to old to finance now) and spending it on this type of car, unless you want an all out race car. I'd be interested to see what they sell for vs. what they are asking. Fast & Furious was a double edged sword. It put them on the map but in a way that associates the car with young kid street racers, and to a certain degree we all care about how we are perceived. In all honesty I really have no desire to drive a street car with 1100 hp. Nothing wrong with a Miata BTW.

scottmandue 06-28-2014 11:55 AM

I know... less than half the HP... but if I had $50K burning a hole in my pocket:

PenFed loans on cars that older and older. I had one lined up for my 968 (at 2.99% no less) until I decided just to pay cash for it.
