Good idea to swap out the smoke for a heat detector.
Also not sure if where you are has a Fire Inspection branch of the fire department but you might want to call them and explain what happened and then ask them what the laws are in your area regarding automatic dispatch calls. Good idea to get the correct information from someone who's not having a bad day. ![]() As to the firefighters only working 8 days a month, that works out to be 192 hours a month or 4 weeks & 4 days if you figure a 40 hr work week. Probably more hours than some people work in the same time period. Hard to have a dog when you work 24 hr shifts. A cat can be left alone for that time but a dog can't. I'm not even going to mention how hard working shifts like that can be on personal relationships. "Fat pension after 25 years" Well most pensions are determined by how much you pay into them. That and your length of employment determines what a pension will be. It's part of your wages which you bargain for when you start employment with any company. At least it was with mine.

GW -
How many hours, out of the (supposed) typical 40hr/week, does the average worker get to sleep? --zero, I expect. How many hours, out of the typical 48hr/week, does the average fire fighter get to sleep? --16, I expect. I have yet to find a FF who needs a dog sitter. I expect they exist - such heavy problems... "I'm not even going to mention how hard working shifts like that can be on personal relationships." You mean because you're home so much? Yeah, I get that too. ![]() Any pension that survives the boomers is fat. Pensions drop like flies for so many others who thought they were getting something for the future. Most workers have nothing of the sort.

If my house is on fire, the VERY well funded FD won't save it. Best they will do is save the neighboring houses. But why be honest when sensationalism is so handy...

In response to the OP, the OIC handling the call was correct about not resetting the alarm, but he seriously needs to work on his bedside manner a bit. If that was one of my officers that did that and I found out about it, he would have gotten his ass reamed by me. Once we are dispatched to a call we have to respond, even if it is known to be a false alarm. No if ands or buts. Nobody can call us off or return us except the OIC at the scene.

He's management. They don't exist. Everyone is just a firefighter.

Firefighters frequently run into burning buildings. Cops rarely get shot at.
They both get danger pay. Just sayin'.
