first love before porsche!
i bought my first healey in 1964 right out of college and have owned several way back in the day. i did my first v8 conversion in 1968 while stationed at ft sill oklahoma....violated a 1959 austin healey bn6 with a ford 289 motor and transmission. but this was when that was sort of the craze and they were cheap and available then..not quite the same now! i bought a reasonably priced 1958 austin healey bn6...always loved the two seaters...from a guy in new jersey. i went and picked it up in a 1500 mile round trip dash last weekend...i will not convert this one! work to be done but i will not.....

In 1967 tried very hard to buy a Jag XKE. The car didn't want to be purchased as it constantly overheated. I then bought a Porsche and never looked back.

Here is my first car! 59' BN-6 with factory hardtop for 2 seater! got it in 75' for $700 and repainted it midnight blue and white. Best part is I still own it!!! Never had the heart to sell it, so I just hung onto it. I have had six big Healeys, but always kept this one. But I should have sold this one and saved the factory 100-M I had, as it is worth much more today, than the 100-6. Enjoy, as they are great cars and fun to drive, even if you have to tinker with them daily!

My Dad was/is a huge British and Italian sports car nut. I love the big Healys...I learned to love working on cars with my Dad twisting my hand into place he couldn't reach.
The pictures are great!

My ride home from the hospital when I was born was in a Healy 3000.
Old English white w/ red seats and white piping. I loved Healys but my first self acquired love was alfa romeo. |

I learned my "stick and rudder" skills right here in 1977-78. My dad bought it new in early '68 and was the last new '67 the dealer had. I was five and remember the salesman saying goodbye to my dad as we drove off. Kept it until 1980 when I was a senior in high school. No radio, wood wheel and dash, overdrive. Used to go to Tahoe for summer vacations when the car was new and it would get hot going up Highway 50 out of Placerville. We'd pull over and let it cool down with the other overheated cars. Great to go around the lake with the top down. My dad taught me how to drive it in such a way as to preserve the clutch's health and avoid potholes. I use those skills in my '84 today.

Those Austin Healeys are crazy $ now. My first sports car was a '56 AH 100-4. I don't know what the original colors were, but this one was BRG w/ yellow upholstery. I put a '59 Corvette engine in it later on. Big mistake & should have left it stock & kept it. I put a lot of fun miles on it. For some reason, I always thought those cars were some of the sexiest sport cars ever. I had other sports cars of that era, and really like how open they were in the cockpit area compared to cars now. That's also one thing I like about old Porsches.

yes they are really expensive now... and, after driving my other hot rods and especially the v8 63 bj7 it feels like you are dragging an anchor...but back in the day they would keep up with most traffic. my v8 bj7...

Nice!
My dad just sold his '61 (BN7?... BT7?). He bought it in '98 or '99, did a frame-off restoration and he and my mom put many miles on it going on trips to various AH Club events all over the East and Midwest. It was a really nice car and was never a trailer queen! It is the car on the right in this picture that is red over black with the black hardtop. It got sold in favor of an addition to their budding Porsche collection, of which they are searching for now. While they are excited about what's next, I think my dad was sad when the truck came to pick it up. ![]() |
