9/11

Least we forget.

I'm sitting here crying, think of all the people I knew that were lost.

Please say a prayer for all the lost souls of that day.

matt f 09-11-2014 10:15 AM

Mike,

I'm sorry for your loss(es.)
Been saying prayers all day.
I knew some that were murdered that day.
Still sad, more pissed.

Matt

I was listening to NPR on my commute this morning.

Couldn't get something out of my eyes...like the whole time :)

glewis80SC 09-11-2014 02:37 PM

Thoughts and prayers to everyone lost that day, I was on duty and felt helpless here on the west coast, wanted to be able to help in my own small way.

In the United States, Patriot Day occurs on September 11 of each year, designated in memory of the 2,993 killed in the September 11, 2001 attacks. Most Americans refer to the day as “Nine-Eleven (9/11),” “September Eleventh,” or some variation thereof. U.S. House of Representatives Joint Resolution 71 was approved by a vote of 407-0 on October 25, 2001. It requested that the President designate September 11 of each year as “Patriot Day.”

God Bless, Mike. We do not forget.

NY65912 09-11-2014 05:28 PM

Very sad day. I came home to find my wife at the kitchen table in tears. God bless them all!

Thanks.

On September 11th 2001 I was stationed on the USS Ingraham (FFG-61) with the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) Battle Group. We had just pulled out of ****et (It auto edits the resort island it is Ph-uket) Thailand after a liberty port with a destroyer from the battle group, I can't recall the name or hull number. All of a sudden a day or two out of ****et, everything went dark. E-mail, AFRTS satellite feed, and message traffic. Come to find out, the Skipper and the XO had pulled all the departmental officers into the wardroom, briefed them and found out who was from NYC. He brought them together in his stateroom, explained the situation and gave each of them a few minutes to call their families via the satellite telephone in his stateroom. We all had felt the engines crank up, and our speed increase well beyond our normal cruise. I went to the Combat Information Center, and the LT in CIC told me that unless I was coming up on watch that I needed to clear out and wait for the announcement of an all hands meeting.

The Captain got all 150 or so of us on the mess decks and told us the situation. We went from peacetime navy to wartime in all of about 30 seconds. We boogied off to the the Gulf Of Oman to meet up with the rest of the battlegroup. The carrier was launching sorties already, and the DDGs and CGs were launching Tomahawks all day and night. Our little Frigate didn't have that capability, so we played "Plane Guard" for the carrier during flight ops and then once every couple weeks ran the supply ships in and out of the Strait of Hormuz to pick up fuel, food and ammo. Usually the Iranians play chicken with US ships in the straits. Nobody even got close, they knew we would have shot first at that point in time.

In all, I count myself one of the lucky ones. I didn't lose friends or family in NYC, and I didn't watch my friends die or get injured halfway around the world. My war was a lot of standing watch on a fire control radar system. I don't have nightmares or PTSD like so many soldiers, airmen, marines or first responders. I don't have lingering illness, or TBI or missing parts like so many of them.

I don't know if I really care for the name "Patriot Day." I don't have a better idea right now, but it just seems to ring hollow in my ears... I can't explain why, but it sounds like a name a politician would use.

For those of you, if any, who were there in New York City that day or in the sand and rocks and lead rain in the following years you have my gratitude. I volunteered, but was never asked to do that duty. I am thankful that all of you did.

Today is a sad day of remembrance for all the victims of that terrible day.

Thanks for your post Led - something to ponder as we grieve in our own way.

I drove the 911 today. Because it's 9/11.

And to enjoy the day a little. Because no matter what those terrorists did 13 years ago, they haven't snuffed out the American way of life. Living well is the best revenge.

'Those terrorists' are still undefined.
Never forgive or forget.

The after-effects have lasted decades.

NY65912 09-12-2014 03:40 AM

9/11 changed the way we all live, but especially in NYC.

My company had 3 active contracts in the WTC complex. We had the requirements contracts for their plumbing, fire protection and HVAC systems. We came very close to losing people but thankfully that did not occur.

I don't want to do a tally of all those that I knew that were lost that day, but it ranges from childhood friends, schoolmates, neighbors (literally), relatives (firefighter), relatives of friends and of course so many business acquaintances.

I and I think so many of us here in NYC are always waiting "for the other shoe to drop". It wears on you. Everytime I go into Manhattan I think of which route I could use as an escape path back home, maybe we all do.

The first thing I saw this morning was the twin lights from the WTC site in remembrance and honor of 9/11 as I stepped out of my home to leave for work. I said a quick prayer with my son and continued on as we all do.

The wound never fully heals. Thanks to all who remembered yesterday and to those who serve us all to protect us all. We will never forget.

Prayers sent to the families and friends who lost loved ones. Godspeed to the victims. I hope they are resting in peace.

It's time for the US to heal and live again.

Never forget but instead honour your departed with your hard work and courage.
Do what's right not what's easy and look forward and upward.

I truly believe the best years are ahead of you.

Tomorrow marks 22 years since.

Tonight's "60 Minutes".....brought me to tears.

Edit: Difficult to watch so be careful, folks. Appropriate post, btw. Just hard.

RIP To the fallen.

I was back home in PA a year after 9/11 visiting my parents. We drove out to the flight 93 site. Its resting place 1.6 miles from the lake I used to water ski on as a kid. There was a makeshift memorial in place. I'll never forget the speech of a witness. Old on guy, could hardly walk.

His house is the house just south of the site. Very close. He heard the plane, looked up and saw it come in. He mentioned he felt the heat of the blast. It was heartbreaking.

masraum 09-11-2023 08:22 AM

I work for a BIG bank. A lot of folks that I work with knew folks that died or had their lives ripped apart.

It's surprising that today hasn't been turned into a federal holiday of remembrance or something.

Flight 93.

Just watched an hour special on Discovery.

It was well done - lots of family members recalling their interactions.

What those people did on that flight was more than heroic......

I had just left Officer Basic Course a few days earlier and had spent time w my family in Tennessee before returning to Texas to collect my family before we moved to the 1st Infantry Division in Germany.

Flew to Germany with wife and infant son on Sept 15, 2001. Scared for our safety but mainly for theirs. DFW is a strange place when empty and everyone was looking at each other as if trying to figure out which mofo on the plane was going to hijack it and whom I would have to neutralize.

I knew a few guys that lost their lives in Iraq. Consider myself lucky to have just had a few close calls.

I won't forget.

We were there for vacation exactly a year earlier...9/11/2000
We toured the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Stock Exchange and the Twin Towers all in one day.

We had hoped to take the elevator to the roof-top of Tower 1? but they had stopped the roof-top tours shortly before then.

The one thing that really surprised me was when walking into one of the Towers at ground level was just how large they were inside. Hard to believe until you walked in.

22 years later and I get choked up or cry just thinking of this horrific day.

cockerpunk 09-11-2023 12:48 PM

i was in 9th grade, ironically we were doing a current events in social studies at the time.

it was a day. a death of innocence for America.

sc_rufctr 09-11-2023 01:19 PM

It was around 11pm in Adelaide when it happened. I watched the whole thing live.

The next day at work we talked about nothing else. That's when I knew things had just changed forever. Never forget.

- Reach out and hug your loved ones.

Can’t believe it has been 22 years.

The haunting image for me is the falling man.

The response to this event changed this country forever.

I don't mean to correct you Sir Paul but it changed the world especially the Western World forever.

They didn't die for nothing. RIP.
