They showed the security footage from the station on the news tonight. It shows the owner with a squeegee running it along the left rear fender before the fire started. They speculated the owner overfilled the tank and was directing fuel off the car using the squeegee.

The attendant had also said the owner was laughing after but that he did help get people out of the way of danger.

I suppose I would have not wanted fuel on my paint job if it was my car. Insurance companies will be battling over this one.

If the gas overflowed, then shouldn't the station have some responsability for not maintaining thier pump shut off mechanism in the nozzle ?

That's for the lawyers to decide. Yes, if he still had the nozzle firmly in the filler pipe. No, if he did not. Since he's already lying about it ( just spilled a couple drops...), don't hold your breath waiting for everybody to admit to their portion of the blame.

Pity nobody used any of the fire extinguishers mounted to the pumps...

Just because you are rich doesn't mean you aren't a moron.

It's in Canada, there won't be any law suit involve unless it was not insured.

No auto shut off, in Canada, that I am aware of.
User controlled.

Really?

How do you know when the tank is full? Do you just wait for it to overflow every time or just put in 3/4 or a tank and call it good?

I just stick the nozzle in the gas tank filler neck and let er rip until it shuts off every time I fill up.

Not sure where you gas up, but all the big names station has some and its actualy the law:

"because the law requires us to install nozzles that shut off automatically
when the tank is almost full..."
From Shell Canada website: http://www.shell.ca/content/dam/shell-new/local/country/can/downloads/pdf/consumers/safety/fuel-safety.pdf

It usually stop a few times on me during fill-up.

What? Maybe not in BC, but here in Ontario our pumps shut off when the tank is full. It's been that way as long as I've known.

Do you guys have to use hand pumps too?

My mistake, I guess, have not been to Ontario for a long enough time, yet.
You have to squeeze the handle, manually, here in B C.
If you let go of the handle it does in fact "auto shut off".
