What makes it a "chick car"?

I've seen plenty of guys of all ages drive Mini Coopers - cool cars that I happen to like a lot. One could even consider it "cute", it's small, about the same size as a Miata yet no one ever seems to call it a chick car. Does it automatically get credibility from its rally car roots? 911s are small (well, not the new ones) but have a great pedigree, no one calls them chick cars.

On a slightly related note, is a Subaru BRZ considered a chick car? I haven't heard anyone say so. It's small and Miata-sized. It has crossed my mind for a daily, I drove one and came away impressed. I'm looking for Japanese, good MPG, manual trans and I really want rear will drive (the list shrinks considerably with that last one).

Thoughts...?

The BRZ seems like it's the new Honda civic. I've seen big packs of 'em driven by twentysomething kids. All sorts of trick parts are apparently available for them already.

I'd like to drive one sometime, it looks like a real hoot...

The Subaru seems to receive good Reviews all around.

On the topic of chick cars I would guess the easiest answer is that it is a car that tend to attract women drivers/owners. WHY certain makes and models do that - I have no idea. I never even pretend to understand women.

I have heard plenty of people call MINIs chick cars, not so much the Mini. Cute, small and chicks dig it will qualify it. 911 traditionally has not had an air conditioner that was any good, too much steering effort, no buena.

BRZ/FRS is a sweet handling little coupe. If you get one, make them change out the tires before you accept delivery. The next gen Miata will be coming out pretty soon, if you like the BRZ I bet you would like the looks of it.

The biggest push for a car to be called a chick car is the drivers. I have known only a few women that drive a 911 and even fewer that drive an air cooled 911.

Most every New Bug I see is driven by a female. Heck that car comes with a flower vase.

The Miata has a LOT of female drivers. The Boxster has a lot of female drivers.

The original Dodge Viper is a car that will make the hair on your chest and face grow thicker. I have enough chest and facial hair and no interest in a Viper.

I would need at least all-seasons as I drive in some winter/snowy weather and I think the BRZ comes with summer tires.

typically any combination (2 out of 3) of small, convertible and not very powerful. Screams beta male or woman.

If it's small, it had better be hellaciously expensive or have huge #'s on the track. Man in convertible just screams old and impotent (squared to infinity if you are wearing pastels) or queer.

"What makes it a "chick car"?"

Men who are insecure about their sexuality.

That is, unless it's painted metallic pink.

Exactly what I was going to say. I think it was Sigmund Freud who coined the phrase "dick issues." However, even the most secure males have a threshold beyond which they cannot pass and that pink Corvette is a perfect example.

Yes, unless the car has a "big dick" then it screams "beta male or woman." You prove the point that it stems from male sexual insecurity and how some men worry about how they are perceived by other men.

Here's queer old Clint Eastwood awhile back. Healeys had style that made up for their lack of 'dick' in stock form. So he had that going for him. The big poof should have had a Corvette with fuel injection--and the hardtop bolted in place.

I spotted this one. But at least it wasn't painted that gawd awful pink.

If you like the car what do you care if some people think it's a chick car. Maybe the chicks will dig it and want a ride.

One of my co-workers (a guy) drives an older, white Hyundai Tiburon, the smaller, front wheel drive version (they have some Ferrari 456 styling cues). I never thought they were oozing testosterone but one of my other co-workers (a gal) called it a chick-car. I hadn't thought about it with that car until she mentioned it, I should have asked her why she thought so.

Edit: Fixed the name, not Genesis but Tiburon

I do! Top down, wind in my hair, engine sound coming up over the back (rarely below 3,000 revs). It's the best money I ever spent.

Not giving a f**k what others think is a great power to have.

I know this is a intellectual exercise because in reality there is no sexual orientation to an automobile.
I am too lazy to dig up a list of lady automobile racers that could kick our collective macho a$$es on the track if given the chance.
But then I'm a Miata owner so what do I know (Miata=most raced production car)
RE: The BRZ, that would be on the short list of my "want as the Miata replacement" when that time comes.
FWIW when I bought the 944 there were some "chick car" comments, not that it bothered me at that time either.

Maybe you mean a Hyundai Tiburon? Pretty sure all the Genesis are RWD (Genesis coupe is also on my "next car" list)

If a girl calls it cute - it's a chick car. If you care - you're insecure.
