This thread really interested me as there was a discussion about this very subject on Monday with my co-workers. The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW's ) actually make this distinction very clear in their literature. In order to 'join' you have to have directly served; in a time of conflict and be able to present document(s) to prove it. So to go to any VFW establishments and partake, you must have 'been there'.

My father, uncle and many of his close friends served in WWII, my oldest brother and a close friend served in Vietnam, a close relative of my wife is currently serving in the current conflict. They all had different levels of risk, dangers, responsibilities. In my eyes............... they all served our Country, each giving something unique of themselves, personal sacrifice...... and all knew that the possibility existed that they may not return home in one piece or at all.

I have written a lot of those over the years...glad to see folks still hang on to them. They really used to be difficult to get approved. Not so much now.

I am a real Vietnam combat vet, as was really there in the Infantry 69-70. Vietnam era vets should not be confused with the real thing....pretty Freaking weak to me. It is about as far away as saying you watched the moon landing...and you are a era astronaunt.....

So you're saying that unless a vet served in combat - Viet Nam or otherwise - they ought not consider themselves a vet?
IOWs, Viet Nam "era" ...meaning in the service during the Viet Nam confllict BUT not being in combat?
Just wondering, here. Maybe I'm not reading this correctly.
Thanks.

OIC what you're saying.
So would someone who served in Viet Nam, but not in direct combat (air or ground), be a "Viet Nam Vet"...in your view?

My statement is quite simple....when it comes to Vietnam....you are not a vietnam veteran unless you have been there. Real combat veterans have a unique bond most people can't relate to. If you have never been in combat you will never understand ...... I have no issues with other veterans

both my father and grandfather were combat veterans. After hearing about what they went through you almost have classify combat veterans in a different way. They are the ones that have life altering mental and physical issues.

See how specific/opinionated this conversation turned among us Vets regarding "what makes a Veteran"?

When I finished boot camp, I just moved across the base for Tech training. A few days later, a buddy and I went to the Commissary. There was guy from our boot camp company buying service ribbons and medals. We asked what he was up to. He said "Getting some ribbons for my uniform. Where's yours?"

He didn't know those had to be earned. To this day I still wonder about that. And yes, he really didn't know. He put them back and left quickly.

No one argues that.
Combat veterans are especially honored but they can't do their job without a long string of logistics of non combat veterans and paper pushers.

Thank you for your service.
