Tanglefoot works great... I smear it over my high-value trees that the peckers like to destroy....
Its basically a non hardening silicone that irritates them... |

So two summers ago, I had my chimney chase r&r'd, replacing probably 20% of the siding, trim and repainted WAY past the reach of my 24' ladder and $ well spent as I'm NOT a fan of heights...good for years I thought
. Damn woodpeckers have now put several softball size holes in the upper section while I was away fishing a couple of months ago (I was good at shooing them away by throwing tennis balls prior)....and I left 'em alone when I saw nesting activity. And to think I used to like Woody??? Why do they like MY chimney? ...there's acres of hardwoods, pines, etc. behind my house....go figure
